Technical Support- Rail Grinding

Purpose of the Role
To provide effective specialist and technical support to the Rail Grinding machines, including the C21XX, C44XX and SPMLXX series machines in both remedial and reactive scenarios, supporting the requirements of both the customer and Colas Rail, in ensuring the requirement to operate and maintain vehicles within a manner which is both safe and effective.
Key Accountabilities
Safety - Actively demonstrate support for the implementation of the Colas Rail Limited Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) strategy, associated with the safe operational delivery and performance of Rail Grinding machines and crew.
Profitability - Ensure through the optimization of machine performance and staff competencies that services are delivered to the expectations of all customers with regard to quality and quantity, driving performance related penalty charges to wards zero.
Quality - The reputation of Colas is significantly influenced by the effectiveness and quality of the services we deliver and the competence and professionalism of the staff delivering and managing (real time) those services, the post holder must ensure that operating crews have the necessary training and competence to safely and consistently deliver the quality demanded by today's railway.
Respect - Treat people in a fair and consistent way at all times and work to understand internal and external client's needs and requirement.
Key Tasks
- Ensure high levels of safety, performance, attendance and behavioral standards.
- To ensure that all contract, technical and administrative instructions are implemented.
- Assist with ensuring that accurate and prompt reporting of all faults in accordance with Colas Rail procedures.
- Undertake specialist repair work to unique and often proprietary systems
- Assist with the repair to Class 1, 2 and 3 lasers
- Undertake the install of complex mechanical,electrical and electronic upgrades to Rail Grinding machines
- Develop and implement audit and testing process to ensure machines are performing to required levels
- Undertake remedial work with specialist systems
- Ensure that all technical support is carried out to the required standards
- Provide information and feedback as required to affected parties
- Liase effectively with appropriate staff regarding the impact of changes or proposed changes to specialist systems
- Provide training support where necessary
- Identify any potential innovative procedure or process that could be developed and adopted to improve performance, output or delivery quality to provide a world class service to our customers
- Ensure any reactive maintenance carried out is promptly recorded and reported to the Maintenance Supervisor in a timely manner
- Act as instructed to fulfill for the duties of L2 On-Call for the purposes of technical assistance and logistical assistance.
- Report to Colas Control as required including for accidents, incidents, emergencies or operational issues, booking on/off duty, notification of exceedance etc.
- Work to applicable safety plans, guidelines and method statements.
- Comply at all times with Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.
Person Specification
The job holder will:
- Always have safety as the primary consideration in all aspects of delivering and managing the people, process and equipment in Colas Rail.
- Possess a reasonable knowledge of the output and capability of On Track Machines operated by Colas.
- Possess and constantly display all of the attributes of the five E's Energy, Energize, Edge, Execute and Engage
- Be assertive, confident and fair when dealing with any issues and be a proven team player with a logical searching mind.
- Participate in regular monthly safety meeting.
- Participate in Accident and Incident reporting and investigation as instructed and in accordance with the Safety Management System.
- Ensure that mandatory PPE is worn as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Recognized mechanical, electrical, hydraulic apprenticeship
- Experience of working with Rail Grinding machines
- Knowledge of railhead profile management issues and Rail Grinding techniques
- Specialist and in-depth knowledge of technical aspects of Rail Grinding machines
- PTS
- Emergency First Aid
- Designated Person
- Basic Laser Safety Training
- Understanding of Network Rail Line Standards
- Training and assessing qualification is desirable
- Mechanical and or electrical skills
- Good geographical knowledge of the railway network and infrastructure
