Overview:

To lead and direct the depot Production and Movements staff through the Production Delivery Managers to achieve safety & environmental, performance, people, profit and customer targets agreed by the business in respect of the maintenance and movements of Traction & Rolling Stock.

The role has 6 Direct Reports - Shift Production Managers

Role & Responsibilities

• Lead and direct the Depot Production and Movements teams to achieve targeted standards and frequencies of scheduled Servicing, Maintenance, Tyre Turning, and Repairs of Traction & Rolling Stock allocated to, or passing through the depot. Develop and forward plan team workloads and depot work plans to achieve consistently high productivity, making the most effective use of depot facilities and resources
• To lead, develop and champion continuous improvement (lean techniques) in working processes to achieve rigorous standards of train maintenance, movements and shunting within the depot. The role has a 6S check obligation.
• Ensure the recruitment, motivation, training and development of all depot staff to produce effective teams capable of meeting their targets and objectives. Carryout safety, technical and local briefings as required
• Ensure Engineering technical, safety, operating and environmental standards are maintained on all Traction and Rolling Stock and that management systems on the depot comply with company standards. Ensure that the all teams are adhering to these standards.
• In conjunction with the Depot Stores Manager and Production Delivery Managers, ensure that material usage, supply, pricing, reliability of components and supplier performance is monitored, analysed and recommendations made for continuous improvement
• Provide technical and managerial on call support for incidents involving rolling stock in the designated region where competent
• Deputise for the Depot Manager when necessary and attend meetings, produce reports on the Depot Managers behalf

MOST CHALLENGING AND/OR DIFFICULT PARTS OF ROLE

The ability to think strategically and identify opportunities for improvement

• Plan depot projects that can give ownership at relevant level of organisation with an aim to increasing fleet performance
• Ability to motivate and empower all team members to deliver continuous improvements in work processes, productivity and standards to exceed customer expectations.
• Development and implementation of work schedules and staff rosters to co-ordinate vehicles movements to deliver agreed Depot workload plans consistent with achieving most effective use of Depot facilities and resources
• Encouraging new ways of working whilst using LEAN practices to make improvements on tasks

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

• Significant experience of engineering with particular emphasis on rolling stock and depot management is desirable but not essential
• Engineering qualifications to HNC/HND standard are essential.
• NEBOSH Certificate or working towards is essential
• Managerial qualifications are essential
• Experience of safety, quality and technical product audits and auditing techniques is desirable
• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills
• Experience of contracts management desirable
