Head of Geomatics *Job Summary The geomatics team sit in our asset management group, who are managed nationally out of our Nottingham Asset Management centre of excellence and deliver a range of inspection, survey, investigation and asset management services to a growing internal and external market. With an increasing global market in the field of geomatics, a growing portfolio of high profile civil infrastructure projects in the UK and further investment in new technologies, we are recruiting a head of geomatics to lead the strategy, growth and development of our national geomatics team. The team work in multiple sectors and have a strong capability in transportation, environment and buildings and places, with regional teams in Glasgow, Manchester, Ashford and Swindon.

To act as Discipline Lead by providing leadership and acting as a focal point for the geomatics discipline. The post holder will provide guidance and leadership to staff within the discipline and will represent AECOM at a senior level externally in the industry.

Internally the Discipline Lead will provide strong technical support to the discipline in terms of bid production, mentoring and developing staff competencies and developing relationships across regions including overseas. The Discipline Lead will actively participate in project delivery and contribute to the internal growth of the discipline. Externally the Discipline Lead will develop relationships with industry peers and keep abreast of technical and technological developments in the discipline. The Discipline Head will be the senior focal point for the discipline in the industry.

Job Duties:

Project and Quality Delivery:

  • Oversee the technical quality of work carried out by the discipline and ensure that a consistent and acceptable level of quality is provided across the discipline as a whole.
  • Carry out lessons learned reviews and instil a culture of continuous improvement. Ensure that an appropriate level of auditing of discipline outputs is carried out.
  • Be actively involved in project delivery and ensure that a high level of sold time is achieved.
  • Ensure that the technical processes and procedures for the delivery of discipline outputs are robust and updated as and when appropriate. Ensure that refined technical processes and procedures are in place. Develop and maintain standardised delivery processes to ensure consistency of outputs in the discipline.
  • Participate in Safety and Quality management meetings as appropriate and contribute to the direction of the discipline within the sector.

Staff Development:

  • Ensure that all staff in the discipline are appropriately ranked in terms of skills and technical competence and maintain adequate records to monitor this. Ensure that all relevant licences are kept up to date and that staff are briefed on technical and technology developments in the disciplines. Provide guidance in further development of staff training.
  • Be responsible and manage all staffing issues including staff appraisals, training, annual pay and promotions and succession planning
  • Ensure all discipline staff understands their responsibilities relating to health & safety, quality and sustainability, and that the policy statement and guiding principles are communicated and understood.
  • Be actively involved in the identification of and subsequent development of Graduates and Apprentices within the discipline. Ensure that appropriate levels of mentorship and guidance are being provided towards achieving professional status.

Bidding / Work Winning and Growth:

  • Work with the Director (Asset Management Group), Rail Regional Directors and Asset Management Discipline leads to develop a plan for growth for geomatics with a three year horizon based on market trends and pipeline opportunities.
  • Proactively be involved in bids to ensure that the discipline input is properly and adequately represented and that interfaces with other disciplines and stakeholders are adequately identified and managed.
  • Ensure robust technical bid preparation.
  • Ensure that work winning effort is focussed on providing work for the discipline. Prepare and publish monthly charts showing resource needs based on secured and potential work.
  • Provide management reports as required with a monthly update of progress against plan.

Resourcing:

  • Manage the discipline staff and equipment resources in a pro-active way to ensure that all projects are adequately resourced
  • Where appropriate work with overseas work share centres and with the supply chain to ensure that adequate resources are available to suit Client needs. In particular, work with overseas work share centres to develop the skills and quality of service provision from these centres.
  • Ensure that a realistic representation of the discipline resource needs is prepared.
  • Be visible across all offices where staff in the discipline are located and ensure that an appropriate level of leadership is provided.
  • Arrange and chair bi-monthly meetings involving key discipline staff and communicate matters arising.
  • Be actively involved in the recruitment of staff by the identification of resource gaps and ensure that these gaps are filled with appropriately skilled and experienced staff.

Client Engagement:

  • To be recognised externally as the professional head of the discipline and participate in conferences, meetings and other industry events. Promote externally the capacity and capability of the discipline team and actively seek project and service opportunities.
  • Write and deliver papers to promote the level of expertise available within the business.
  • Maintain close, personal, contact with key clients undertaking a formal programme of local client reviews on a regular basis. Have a detailed understanding of the local geomatics market.
  • Work closely with other local business Lines to promote the whole of AECOM’s expertise in the discipline to clients.

*Minimum Requirements

  • Experience in geomatics
  • A leader and champion of the discipline with excellent cross sector geomatics industry knowledge
  • Ability to facilitate growth within the discipline and be recognised externally by Clients
  • Mobile and visible across all AECOM offices and a good people manager
  • Ideally a Chartered Surveyor with the RICS or equivalent
