Intermediate Quantity Surveyor – Reading

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Intermediate Quantity Surveyor to work with the largest Utility companies in UK.

The Quantity Surveyor will be the main point of contact in providing commercial advice in our South East region.

The successful Quantity Surveyor will work within our estimating team to prepare tender submissions including taking quantities, preparing subcontractor and supplier enquiries, assessing and processing subcontractor payment applications etc. The post would eventually include in house training in order to extend the role to include estimating in the future.

You will be a part of highly professional Quantity Surveying team empowered to make decisions and responsible for all commercial aspects related to maintaining a vast sewer network. This role offers the opportunity to carry out a diverse role with wide range of Quantity Surveying aspects from measurements on site to dispute resolutions and be the lead regional commercial point of contact with contractors. This is a unique role which offers you the opportunity to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.

This role offers you to the opportunity to work within a very successful structured APC training programme with a support network of a number of Chartered Quantity Surveyors, RICS APC assessors and colleagues studying to become MRICS.

What will this role involve?

Responsibilities for the successful Quantity Surveyor will vary depending on the nature and stage of the project being worked on, but can include:

Being responsible for all commercial aspects related to £20m of spend.

Preparing tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities with the architect and/or the client;

Undertaking cost analysis for repair and maintenance project work;

Assisting in establishing a client's requirements and undertaking feasibility studies;

Performing risk, value management and cost control;

Advising on procurement strategy;

Identifying, analysing and developing responses to commercial risks;

Preparing and analysing costings for tenders;

Allocating work to subcontractors;

Providing advice on contractual claims;

Analysing outcomes and writing detailed progress reports;

Valuing completed work and arranging payments;

Maintaining awareness of the different building contracts in current use;

Understanding the implications of health and safety regulations.

What skills are we looking for?

This is a very fast paced role and not static, hence it requires someone who can take ownership of events, think on their feet, devise a plan of action and implement effective solutions. You are the kind of person who takes ownership and leadership of commercial tasks. The ideal candidate will have the gravitas to communicate with senior management whilst also being able to advice on individual site based projects. To be successful in this role you will need to be a team player and work closely with operational team members. You will have the ability to hold your ground and offer reasoned advice in a fast paced environment.

Ideally but not essential the Quantity Surveyor applicant would have formal qualifications in Quantity Surveying with work history as a Quantity Surveyor for a building contractor.

Please note this role will involve travel to different company sites so a valid UK driving licence is essential.
