PURPOSE OF THE JOB
An engineer with hydrogen industry and/or fuel cell experience is sought to help Alstom spearhead the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell technology to the UK rail environment. The postholder will be responsible for developing and integrating hydrogen equipment on trains.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- To design and integrate hydrogen systems/equipment on trains.
- To design and integrate other associated systems/equipment on trains.
- To develop designs that meet specification requirements for functionality, safety, reliability and cost.
- To produce technical documentation such as technical specifications, technical reports, bills of material, change management documentation (including modification instructions) and schedules, to support the procurement, manufacture, installation, testing and approval of the design.
- To effectively work in collaboration with Alstom colleagues and external staff, on significant technical matters, in line with overall Alstom objectives and specific plans.
- To prepare for and participate in design reviews, covering work undertaken by both the postholder and by others.
- To gain design approval from internal and external bodies and customers.
- To participate in validation testing and inspection of first article components.
- To ensure materials selected are compliant to relevant standards and fit for purpose.
- To support production staff in ensuring first vehicle build is undertaken correctly.
- To investigate and resolve problems found during production.
- To travel to Alstom, supplier or customer sites in the UK or worldwide, as necessary, to support the requirements of the post.
- To comply with, undertake and promote all relevant Environment, Health & Safety measures, responsibilities and activities.
- To deliver all activities in accordance with the project cost, time and quality targets.
POST HOLDER REQUIREMENTS
Essential:
Education level
- Degree or HND in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
Experience
• Extensive experience in a Systems engineering environment including the integration of mechanical and electrical systems.
• Knowledge/experience of Hydrogen fuel cell technology in a transport system environment (cars, trains, buses, or lorries etc). This should include:
o Fuel cells, batteries and control systems
o Electrical auxiliary supply systems
o Energy recovery systems including use of recovered energy to boost acceleration
o Integration of hydrogen technology on to transport systems
o Hydrogen storage technology – gas tank technology and safety considerations
- Previous experience of effective planning, costing and project management activity.
- Knowledge of the Tendering process and the associated activities required.
- Able to discuss and effectively communicate complex technical material to both other technical experts and non-technical colleagues.
- The proven ability to work both independently and in cooperation with other internal & external stakeholders.
- The ability to travel throughout the UK (& Ireland?) on a regular basis, with occasional travel overseas, often requiring overnight stays.
Desirable:
Experience/Knowledge/Skills
- Systems engineering experience on trains (train design, train system integration).
- Previous experience of working in a large multi-national organisation.
