Lead Signalling Designer

£400-£500/day – 3 month contract

Based in Crewe

Our client is a well established Nationwide Rail company whose professionalism and well respected name, have been instrumental in their success.

You will need:

Essential

  • IRSE Licence holder Signalling Principles Designer and Signalling Design Verifier or working towards.
  • Demonstrable experience in detailed signalling design
  • A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
  • An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
  • An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
  • Construction design management, auditing and risk assessment competency.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
  • Working towards an engineering degree or equivalent industry recognised qualification
  • Experience in signalling installation, construction and maintenance.
  • Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.
  • Familiar with the requirements of ‘Common Safety Methods’ (CSM)
  • IRSE Licence holder Signalling Design Manager / Engineering Manager or working towards
  • A1 Assessor

The Role:

As a Lead Signalling Designer you will be responsible for the signal engineering design of allocated projects from clarification of remit to the completion and delivery of the project, ensuring that the engineering solutions to proposals are developed and completed to best satisfy the company’s business requirements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead a team of designers undertaking signalling design activities ensuring that delivery is technically accurate, and delivered to time and budget.
  • Act as Responsible Design Engineer / Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (Signalling) for signalling renewals projects during both development and implementation.
  • Ensure that all detailed engineering and development activities, result in schemes that are affordable, meet programme requirements in a safe & environmentally responsible manner and are delivered to time, cost and quality.
  • Monitor (or undertake where applicable) the development of engineering options giving consideration to safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues.

Engineering excellence is to be supported by:

  • Securing all relevant base data.
  • Review of compliance against the appropriate standards.
  • The use of risk identification and evaluation methods as suitable, to evaluate and compare options.
  • Use feedback from all relevant past projects across the UK rail network and lessons learned to improve quality of design.
  • Keeping designers up to date in signalling technology via training, briefings, and mentoring.
  • Maintain strict change control on scope development; evaluate cost, time and performance impacts in conjunction your line manager and project engineers.
  • Manage (or undertake where applicable) the preparation of the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design, and participate in answering clarifications and queries as needed.
  • Carry out independent checking of signalling design documentation.
  • Support the provision of adequate resourcing for project design, in both the quality and quantity of internal and supplier staff, and in the use of the most appropriate support equipment.
  • Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines, or within other programmes.
  • Liaise with the Designated Project Engineer throughout the project on inter-discipline matters.
  • Assist in design activities associated with testing for new or modified systems / installations as directed
