We are currently working with a major engineering contractor who are looking to expand their Signalling Capabilities in either their Stockport or Swindon offices by recruiting a Signalling Designer to work alongside a wider multidisciplinary team, delivering a portfolio of varied rail projects. As Signalling Designer, you will be part of a team accountable for the successful delivery of both scheme development and detailed design commissions. As Signalling Designer your focus will be on developing and enhancing existing skills and knowledge in a stimulating and testing project environment. The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to Enhancements, Renewals, Re-Modelling, Level Crossings, LV Power, and a diverse range of technologies from Mechanical/Electro-mechanical, RRI, Geographical interlocking, CBI and ETCS. Exposure to fields such as hazard analysis and dependability will also be given to further promote development.

As Signalling Designer your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensuring the successful delivery of multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK Rail portfolio
  • You will be accountable for, and typical activities will include Provide and undertake appropriate signalling design capability to signalling. Ownership for signalling design output including supporting calculations and report writing on both single and multi-disciplinary projects. Activities include design of signalling layouts; design calculations e.g., signal spacing and power calculations; LOC and REB design; generation and evaluation of signalling options and staging; circuit analysis; technical report writing, interfacing with other disciplines and project technical administration.
  • Mentoring of junior design staff.
  • Design office cover for Commissioning activities.
  • Undertake risk assessments and enquiry using the appropriate tools and methods.
  • Ability to plan and manage the work of self within the defined scope of a signalling task or activity.
Job Requirements
  • Broad underpinning knowledge of signalling design principals, standards, components, and fabrication methods.
  • IRSE Signalling Designer License
  • Broad knowledge of railway systems, (and the key interactions between other railway assets), and with railway operating practices.
  • Self-starter who will have an area of duty, that is clearly defined and liaises with senior staff.
  • Significant exposure in the use of signalling software packages (Plans, Gwire, etc) will be an advantage.
  • Hands-on knowledge of the production of scheme development or detailed signalling design and calculations. Other railway design background within the rail industry will be an advantage.
