ROLE & RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENT
JOB TITLE: TECHNICIAN (Signalling)
SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY: Safety Critical

RESPONSIBLE TO: Signalling Production Supervisor
PURPOSE: Maintenance, repair and installation/modification of safety critical systems and equipment
ROLE:
The Signalling Technician will be responsible for liaising directly with the Operations Department in regard to day to day performance of the systems and equipment within their control.
Because of the high safety critical content of the post, the Signalling Technician will ensure that all work carried out on these systems and equipment is carried out strictly in accordance with the organisational standards and procedures .
Planning, organising and carrying out preventative maintenance within the Signalling Technician’s control and in collaboration with the Operations Department is also an important feature of this post.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A full range of current and future Signalling assets, and related equipment in accordance with Nexus maintenance procedures or other specifications.
STATUTORY DUTIES:
Fault Response
- Lead the testing, fault finding and rectification of failures and signalling and associated systems and equipment.
- Undertake Signal Maintenance Testing of signalling and associated systems and equipment.
- Undertake the initial investigation of wrongside failures.
- Undertake the initial investigation of operational incidents.
- Liaise with the Operations Department to agree fault rectification programme.
- Prepare reports on all incidents and faults resulting in delays to service.
Planned Maintenance
- Undertake planned preventative maintenance of signalling and associated systems and equipment.
- Re-schedule planned maintenance to meet operational requirements.
Installation
- Undertake installation work associated with new, renewed and modified signalling and associated systems and equipment.
- Test/commission installation work in accordance with Group Standards and procedures.
Refurbishment and Repair
- Undertake refurbishment of equipment including re-testing.
- Undertake repairs to equipment including re-testing.
Technical
- Ensure all activities undertaken comply with the Group Technical Standards and procedures.
- Monitor the performance of systems and equipment (inspections).
Health and Safety
- Ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and procedures.
- Ensure that all staff under their control comply with the Safety Management System Policy and Procedures.
Administration
- Prepare and complete all documentation associated with fault finding and rectification.
- Prepare and complete all documentation associated with planned preventative maintenance.
- Prepare and complete all documentation associated with installation.
- Arrange for Track access for all work undertaken by the Maintenance team.
- Utilise the group maintenance manager system to import and export information.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Essential
1. Experience of Maintenance & fault finding of Signalling equipment and systems in a safety critical environment.
2. Ability to act as a Team Leader.
3. ONC or equivalent in Electronics / Electrical Engineering or equivalent vocational qualification
4. Experience of shift work
5. Driving Licence
Desirable
1. Good communication skills
2. Knowledge/experience of use of computers
3. Installation experience
4. HNC or equivalent in Electronics / Electrical Engineering or an equivalent vocational qualification

The role – Signalling Technician
Based at Nexus Rail Headquarters, Newcastle upon Tyne, the successful applicant will lead a small team in the routine and fault maintenance of a variety of signalling systems including Route Relay interlocking, Electro-Hydraulic Point Machines, HW 2000 Point Machines, RTMS, SCADA and TDM.
You will be required to have the ability to carry out fault diagnosis and rectification on these and other associated signalling equipment. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their experience and ability to perform unsupervised and in a professional engineering manner when dealing with Safety Critical Equipment and be capable of working in accordance with Nexus Procedures.
The person
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and be able to excel in a role where both safety and performance are critical.
You should hold an appropriate qualification to ONC standard or equivalent in Electrical/ electronic engineering or an equivalent vocational qualification in Railway Signalling. A full driving licence is also essential.
There is a requirement to work a shift roster which provides 24 hour, 365 day cover.
