Position: Carbon and Energy Manager
Location: London
Reporting to: Group QHSE Director

Purpose of the Role

The measurement of our carbon footprint and the business action to reduce this is key to our business success. Colas Rail has a clear opportunity to be at the forefront of carbon management as it does currently on areas of safety and wellbeing. This role forms a critical function in the current team, in order to lead and direct the Carbon agenda across the group that is now fundamental to our vision and strategy.

Key Success Measures

  • Safety- Support the implementation of the Colas Rail Limited Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) strategy, associated actions and resulting initiatives, to deliver continuous improvement in all areas.
  • Profitability- Ensure work is carried out with a continuous view to profitability and efficiency, commensurate with agreed budget and Target Cost.
  • Quality- Quality is key to competitiveness. Take responsibility for delivering on time and on budget a high-quality product or service, which Colas Rail can take pride in.
  • Respect- Demonstrate respect for colleagues, our clients and the environment in all areas of work.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability

To measure and deliver a carbon reduction plan for Colas Rail.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To lead by example, working with business leaders and support functions to develop and achieve a best in class carbon reduction plan with a clear vision of what good looks like¿ to deliver projects in a carbon neutral way.
  • Understanding the approach taken by our key stakeholders, develop a robust approach to carbon measurement at both corporate and project levels that meets the needs of Colas, Colas Rail, our clients and stakeholders.
  • To identify industry best practice relating to carbon reduction and promote its introduction into Colas Rail
  • To create an innovation culture around carbon reduction that makes best use of everyone¿s ideas, regardless of where they are in the company.
  • To lead and develop a communications plan that engages all in the business to understand their role in the Carbon Reduction programme.
  • To establish measures and metrics that help the business regularly track its progress on the Carbon Reduction Programme.
  • To ensure carbon performance features appropriately in our bid submissions and tendering process.
  • To review research within the industry to inform our strategy.
  • To support the business units to help them understand what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint.

Person Specification

  • Educated to at least degree level in carbon management or similar discipline
  • Experience in leading change programmes within a large business (with preferable rail industry experience)
  • Willingness to learn
  • Strong management and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels within the business and the ability to think creatively
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with multiple stakeholders across the business and industry
  • Good relationship building skills
  • Multilingual (English and French)
