Job title: Driver Manager
Location: Central London, Oxfordshire and Midlands
Hours: 38 hour weeks and on call.
Samuel Knight International are looking to recruit a Driver Manager, this candidate will develop and lead the drivers, implement and also maintain train operating standards in order that reliability and punctuality targets consistently. Ensure that all appropriate policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to and all activities comply with the relevant sections of the Safety Management System, HSQE Plans and any applicable Railway Group Standards. To work your own supervision liaising with the Driver Managers at all other locations with regards to any operational or assessment implications.
Responsibilities
- Directly manage the competence, attendance, welfare, discipline, coaching and assessment of your team of drivers.
- Monitor the basic and enhanced training of drivers ensuring that the competency standards are fully met.
- Ensure trains are driven safely and efficiently, operating standards must be met and customer care standards are adhered.
- Regularly carry out competence and performance assessments, including the examination of newly appointed drivers.
- Investigate safety of the line incidents and accidents and make recommendations on improvements and prevention. Make sure all matters are properly reported in line with statutory or railway operating requirements and also that necessary reports are fully completed and submitted within agreed timescales.
- Your driving competency must be maintained and when necessary, accompany or act as a conductor to another driver.
- Undertake cost control exercises in regards to payroll costs, uniform and equipment to ensure that the operations department budgets are not exceeded.
- Be aware of short-term contingency rostering of drivers, liaising with the resource manager and local controllers to ensure that resourcing compiles with the train service specification.
- Check and arrange for delivery of weekly operating notices including London Underground traffic circulars.
- Monitor all notice cases at depots as necessary and post SPAD, traction, train driver and new notices at unsupervised depots and monitor this at supervised depots.
- Ensure that drivers have the correct PPE equipment and that it is always worn correctly.
- Ensure ‘ return to work’ interviews are carried out when necessary.
- Ensure new drivers complete a training needs analysis on joining and endeavour to have them fully productive within the agreed timescales.
- Implement decision and action plans, determined by depot managers
- Accompany the Depot Managers to home visits in connection with post incident operational incidents.
- Ensure that daily and weekly standards checks are carried out for all drivers based at your depot in accordance with the Chiltern Railways Train Crew Depot Standards procedures.
- Manage the housekeeping of the Driver Managers’ accommodation and facilities.
- Ensure that Driver Manager coverage is provided during Public Holidays and on call requirements are covered.
- Ensure that all drivers based at your location have signed for weekly, periodical and all operating notices and take remedial action when this is not done.
- Manage the distribution and signing of any new publications and amendments to publications and maintain an accurate up to date audit trail.
- Maintain a good working relationship with trade union officials and representatives.
Essential
- 5 years train driving
- Railway operations experience and be able to meet the physical and visual standards of a train driver.
- Certificate of Competence in Rules and Regulations including those of London Underground
- Detailed knowledge of Railway Standards.
- Good standards of literacy, numeracy and computer skills are essential.
- Trained in competency assessment in line with company procedures or equivalent in coaching and assessing drivers and also in investigating and responding to incidents and accidents.
- Ability to communicate confidently and effectively both verbally and in writing with drivers and other employees and organisations.
Desirable
- Previous management/supervisory experience is desirable as is knowledge of health and safety matters, train crew rostering and the terms and conditions that are applicable to train drivers
