Purpose of the Role
To drive a Mobile Maintenance Train (MMT) on behalf of Colas Rail Ltd as part of the MMT contract in accordance with the competency based standards for driving rail vehicles and the Colas Rail safety case. The MMT contract is UK wide but emphasis is on the Southern region for this particular role.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
- Carry out all work in a safe and professional manner
- Work as directed by the team leaders, Control room staff and Colas Rail Management
- Report fit for duty in accordance with company procedures
- Booking on and off duty with Colas Rail Control at the time and place specified by weekly rosters & plans
- Keep Colas Rail Control updated with operations as requested
- Report any accidents and incidents to Colas Rail Control
- Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed and submitted in a timely manner as instructed, including DWRs
- Compile and submit comprehensive reports as required
- Liaise with technical staff in the event of a breakdown
- Carry out emergency procedures in the event of an emergency
Role Specific (Driver)
- Obtain any relevant late notice information from the Control Room at Rugby at the beginning of each shift
- Carry out all relevant driver's checks before any rail movements take place
- Responsible for unsupervised safe movement of machines and in accordance to rules and regulations
- Sign, be in possession of, and read all notices and publications effecting Driver route knowledge
- Able to act and adjust driving techniques accordingly to suit prevailing conditions in accordance with company procedures
- Be vigilant in observing all signals applicable to train and machine movements and immediately report any irregularities to the Signaller concerned
- Seek explanation from the Signaller when there is a delay and establish reason for the delay. Communicate this information to relevant the people
- Responsible for reporting to Network Rail in the most expeditious manner, normally via the Signaller, any safety of the line incident so that action may be taken and protection may be put into place
- Identify need for personal route learning, route refreshing and submitting route retention paperwork
- When Drivers meet the Colas Rail DOO standard, Drivers will be expected to perform DOO duties.
Person Specification
We would like to hear from people who have:
- Full European Rail Vehicle Driving License
- Southern Region route knowledge
- Knowledge of driving standards including GE/RT8000 (Rule Book)
- Personal Track Safety certificate
- Passed psychometric testing
- Medically fit to drive rail vehicles
- Full, clean UK road driving license
- Willingness to work shifts and weekends
- Availability to lodge away from home when required
The ideal candidate would have:
- Extensive route knowledge in the Southern Region
