Overview of project/role

Transport for London (TfL) is looking for a commercially driven and strategic leader to join the team as a Commercial Media Manager, responsible for managing and developing the Film Office while maximising revenue from commercial filming across one of the world's most iconic transport networks.

As a Commercial Media Manager, you will lead the delivery and continuous improvement of TfL’s commercial filming strategy, identifying opportunities to grow revenue, enhance services and develop new products that meet the needs of the film and television industry. You will manage a small team, including two direct reports and other resources as required, fostering a high-performing and customer-focused culture.

Overseeing all commercial filming activity, you will ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with TfL policies and operational requirements. Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including operational teams, commercial colleagues, industry bodies and production representatives, you will build strong partnerships that support business growth while protecting and enhancing the TfL brand.

You will also be accountable for delivering and growing a revenue forecast of approximately £1 million per year, identifying new opportunities to increase income through commercial filming and related services. The revenue generated through this role directly supports TfL and is reinvested into London’s transport network.

This is a unique opportunity to combine commercial leadership, people management, stakeholder engagement and operational delivery in a role that plays a significant part in generating value for TfL.

The role is hybrid, with occasional evening, weekend and field-based working required to support filming activities and ensure the successful delivery of commercial media projects.

Key Accountabilities include, but not limited to:

  • Responsible for the delivery and ongoing development of the Film Office Strategy; which seeks to maximise the revenue generated by the Film Office through tangible initiatives (such as unlocking new exclusive filming locations) alongside implementing continuous improvement in the day-to-day operation of the Film Office, based upon developments in the wider industry.
  • Responsible for managing the Film Office web content; the imagery of TfL’s exclusive filming locations; the Film Office terms and conditions and guidance documents; the risk assessments; and the Film Office budget.
  • Project management of commercial filming and photography activities on TfL’s rail estates, including the processing of the script and storyboard approval (ensuring that TfL’s brand, reputation and customers are considered), ensures the management of the associated IP/copyright licensing agreements, health and safety reviews and availability of subject matter experts/critical people required from within TfL (electricians and lift and escalator engineers, for example), and resource planning for the Film Office team to supervise on-site.
  • Responsible for developing and delivering the business-to-business communications plan with TfL’s B2B Marketing & Communication Manager and Social Media Team.
  • Shaping the Film Office team with industry insight, relationships, benchmarking, sector analysis and maintaining a competitive rate-card.
  • Work closely with internal colleagues, including the Commercial Partnerships team and TfL’s Brand Licensing Manager and Legal team, to protect TfL’s brand by taking action to address unauthorised filming/photography and subsequent unauthorised use of TfL’s brand online.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders within the filming industry to represent TfL within the industry and to drive awareness and usage of TfL’s estates and assets in commercial filming/photography; for example, Film London, British Film Institute (BFI), and Location Managers.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills

  • Be a strong people manager to line manage and lead a team of circa 3 people. (Desirable)
  • Be an effective communicator who is comfortable in negotiating the terms and conditions for filming bookings.(Essential)
  • Possess sound a commercial acumen and strategic thinking both in terms of maximising revenue, reducing costs and seeking new opportunities. (Desirable)
  • Able to effectively plan and organise workloads and prioritise projects, tasks and workflow to meet demand. (Essential)
  • Capable of managing and influencing challenging stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. (Essential)
  • Able to efficiently manage multiple simultaneous projects and workflows. (Essential)
  • Capable of managing a budget including forecasting and reporting expenditure (Desirable)

    Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements when working in a high-risk regulated environment such as London Underground (Essential); ideally with an understanding of LU Standards & Rule Books and the production and review of Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work and Method Statements (Desirable)
  • Have a thorough understanding of the UK filming industry; specifically people and organisations which promote exclusive filming locations, select filming locations for productions, and work to promote filming within London and the UK (Essential)
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the worldwide filming industry; including risks and opportunities, trends and current market performance. (Essential)
  • Know how to manage intellectual property/copyright portfolios; with particular focus on brand protection, resolution of unauthorised usage and implementing licences (Desirable)


Experience

  • Previously worked in a high-risk regulated environment such as a railway or airport (Desirable)
  • Experienced in developing and delivering business development strategies (Essential)
