Day-to-day, your focus will be on providing survey data, drawings, models and geospatial information that keep vital, innovative and big-budget projects moving. You’ll apply your own technical expertise across a wide range of complex projects and programmes, providing trusted engineering data to make sure assets are safe, working and compliant.

Overview of project/role

Undertaking Land Survey projects for a range of TfL clients including London Underground, Trams, Highways, Commercial Property and Major Projects. The role holder will capture geospatial data using specialist surveying technology, perform calculations and data processing in survey software packages and produce 2D/3D drawings for use by our clients. Survey projects could include topographic surveys for highways improvements, tunnel gauging surveys with kinematic laser scanning equipment for new rolling stock, permanent way surveys for track renewals and remodelling, 3D laser scanning of stations, buildings and other civils infrastructure, 360-degree photography virtual tours, 3D BIM models, and setting out support for construction projects.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills

  • Outstanding technical surveying skills with a high attention to detail and an ability to understand technical briefings.
  • Good analytical skills, with an ability to identify problems and a proactive approach to solving them.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Good organisational and time management skills

Knowledge

  • Sound working knowledge of land & engineering survey techniques and their practical application such as;
    • Topographic surveying with Total Stations and GNSS receivers
    • Control network measurement and coordinate calculation
    • Railway surveying and track measurement devices (desirable)
    • 3D laser scanning and point cloud data processing (desirable)
  • Awareness of relevant survey industry standards and guidance notes (e.g. TfL, Network Rail, RICS and TSA)
  • Possesses a HND, Degree, TSA Diploma or Level 3 Apprenticeship in Land Surveying, Geospatial Surveying or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
  • Awareness of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints
  • Awareness of the interfaces between Land Survey discipline and the wider transport system

Experience

  • Experience undertaking, land and measured survey projects in railway, highways or tunnel environments. (desirable)
  • Experience of working in safety critical environments to agreed method statements and risk assessments.
  • A demonstrable record of completing survey projects to agreed programmes, budgets and technical specifications.
  • Experience in several survey data processing techniques (e.g control adjustments, survey coordinate reductions, track alignment calculations, point cloud registration or 3D CAD drafting).
  • Experience of Quality Assurance processes and the application of these to ensure technical specifications and standards are met.

The job holder MUST BE physically able to work in the track environment and under common construction conditions including working at height, walking on uneven ground, and in all weather conditions. The role requires the driving of company vehicles to transport survey equipment to/from site locations. Candidates should possess a full driving licence. The role will involve flexible working hours to cover nights and weekends if required. Multiple positions are available with mix of predominantly night or day-based work patterns. The role requires undertaking safety supervision duties, including SPC and PWT-EH, once the individual has gained sufficient experience working in the London Underground environment.
