Job Description

The Fire Engineer is responsible for providing expert advice on fire safety design and risk management within buildings and infrastructure projects. This role involves the assessment, analysis, and development of fire protection strategies to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and best practise. The postholder collaborates with project teams to integrate fire safety solutions from concept through to completion, supporting the delivery of safe and compliant environments.

Key Duties

  • Conduct fire risk assessments and audits to identify hazards and recommend mitigation measures.
  • Develop fire safety strategies, including passive and active fire protection systems, evacuation procedures, and emergency response planning.
  • Prepare detailed fire engineering reports, calculations, and technical documentation to support planning applications and regulatory approvals.
  • Advise on fire prevention, detection, and suppression systems in accordance with current legislation and codes of practise.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure fire safety considerations are fully integrated into design and construction.
  • Review building designs to verify compliance with Building Regulations and relevant fire safety standards.
  • Attend site inspections and provide guidance during construction and commissioning phases to ensure fire safety measures are implemented correctly.
  • Keep up to date with developments in fire safety legislation, technology, and engineering practises.
  • Support the investigation of fire incidents and contribute to the development of remedial actions or improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Safety Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional membership of a recognised fire engineering or safety institution is desirable.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fire Engineering, Fire Safety Engineering, or closely related subject.
  • Continued professional development in fire engineering and related disciplines.

Experience

  • Proven experience working as a Fire Engineer within the built environment sector.
  • Experience conducting fire risk assessments, producing fire engineering reports, and advising on fire safety measures.
  • Familiarity with Building Regulations in England and relevant British Standards related to fire safety.
  • Experience working on projects at various stages from concept design to construction completion.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of fire science principles and fire dynamics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fire safety legislation, codes of practise, and guidance relevant to the UK.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings with regard to fire safety implications.
  • Proficient in fire modelling software and calculations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to produce clear technical reports and liaise with stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Postgraduate qualification specialising in fire engineering is advantageous.
  • Experience with international fire safety standards and practises within Northern Europe.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design principles as they relate to fire safety.

Working Conditions

  • The role is office-based with regular visits to construction sites.
  • Standard full-time hours with occasional requirements for extended hours to meet project deadlines.
  • Work involves use of personal protective equipment when on site and adherence to health and safety policies.
  • The postholder may be required to travel within the United Kingdom and Northern Europe to attend meetings and site visits.
