Project Controls Manager
Job Purpose
The Project Controls Manager plays a key role in supporting the successful delivery of major infrastructure programmes by providing robust project controls across scope, schedule, cost, risk and change. Working within a multidisciplinary project environment, you will establish and maintain project baselines, monitor performance, implement governance processes and provide meaningful reporting to support informed decision-making.
The role will also lead project change management activities, ensuring that all proposed changes are fully assessed, governed and incorporated into project baselines while maintaining compliance with organisational standards and best practice.
The Role
As Project Controls Manager, you will be responsible for managing integrated project controls activities across a major infrastructure programme, ensuring effective governance, reporting and performance management throughout the project lifecycle.
Working closely with project managers, commercial teams, planners and client stakeholders, you will provide assurance that programme information is accurate, robust and supports successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the management and maintenance of integrated project baselines across scope, schedule, cost, risk and change.
- Manage project change control processes, ensuring proposed changes are fully assessed for schedule, cost and commercial impacts before approval.
- Review and assure change requests, providing guidance to project teams to improve the quality and consistency of submissions.
- Ensure approved changes are accurately incorporated into project schedules, cost forecasts and Work Breakdown Structures (WBS).
- Produce regular project controls reports, dashboards and performance metrics for senior leadership and client stakeholders.
- Monitor project performance, identifying trends, risks and opportunities, and recommending corrective actions where required.
- Maintain project controls governance processes, ensuring compliance with organisational standards, procedures and best practice.
- Support the continuous improvement of project controls systems, processes and reporting tools.
- Coordinate governance meetings, preparing agendas, reports, meeting minutes and action trackers.
- Facilitate performance reviews and project controls workshops with delivery teams and stakeholders.
- Provide project controls guidance and mentoring to project teams and junior project controls professionals.
- Support audits, assurance reviews and lessons learned activities across the programme.
- Promote collaborative working and drive continuous improvement across all project controls disciplines.
Skills & Experience
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Strong understanding of Project Controls principles across planning, cost, risk, change and performance management.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail.
- Experience developing and maintaining integrated project baselines.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills with the ability to influence senior project teams.
- Experience producing high-quality reports and presenting project performance information.
- Ability to facilitate governance meetings and drive decision-making through clear performance insights.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities within complex programmes.
Essential Experience
- Significant experience within Project Controls on major infrastructure, transportation, energy, defence or capital programmes.
- Experience in one or more Project Controls disciplines including:
- Planning & Scheduling
- Cost Management
- Change Control
- Risk Management
- Performance Reporting
- Experience using project controls systems such as Primavera P6, Prism, CEMAR, Power BI or equivalent.
- Experience supporting governance boards, change forums and programme reviews.
- Experience working within PMO or client-side delivery environments.
- Experience managing or mentoring junior team members is desirable.
