HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Quality Engineer

Location: Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

Role Responsibilities:

  • Apply BBV Golden Rules and support QA/QC delivery by independently inspecting MEP, Civil and Architectural works, ensuring compliance with approved designs, standards, specifications, and the IPTAN Way through audits, surveillances, and site engagement.
  • Lead and support the preparation, review, implementation, and monitoring of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), including material verification, site inspections, quality surveillances, and assurance that accurate records are produced and stored contemporaneously.
  • Support progressive handover and assurance processes by reviewing MARs, Quality Record Packs, and Single Assurance Packs, managing quality records within digital systems, and liaising with Delivery Teams, Designers, Certification Engineers, and HS2 stakeholders.
  • Manage nonconformities through the full NCR lifecycle, ensuring procedural compliance, timely closure, root cause analysis, KPI reporting, and effective communication of lessons learned to drive continuous improvement and right‑first‑time delivery.
  • Bring proven quality management expertise supported by relevant engineering qualifications, ISO 9001 auditing knowledge, strong analytical and communication skills, stakeholder confidence at all levels, and the ability to work independently within multidisciplinary teams.

Essential Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience across Civil, Architectural, and MEP construction works, supported by a formal engineering qualification and strong knowledge of UK and international standards and industry codes of practice.
  • Proven quality management expertise, ideally supported by ISO 9001 Lead or Internal Auditor training, CQI membership (or working towards), and a strong track record of delivering compliant, assured outcomes.
  • Confident engaging with senior management and stakeholders, able to challenge existing practices constructively to support business improvement and right‑first‑time delivery.
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and reporting skills, with the ability to assess information objectively, maintain attention to detail, manage workload independently, and deliver clear, persuasive reports.
  • Effective communicator and relationship‑builder, resilient and proactive within multidisciplinary teams, competent with modern office systems, and holding essential site credentials including CSCS card and driving licence.
