Rail Signalling (CBTC) Engineer & Design Manager - Denmark
The Role
We are seeking experienced Signalling (CBTC) Specialists for both Engineering & Design Manager positions for a Network Upgrade project in the Danish capital. This is a key technical leadership role, central to the successful design, integration, and migration of CBTC and ATS systems within a live, operational metro environment.
The successful candidates will work as part of the joint venture organisation, collaborating closely with an International team of experts, suppliers, operators, and system stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient, and disruption-free delivery.
Role Overview
In either position, you will provide senior-level technical leadership across the design, integration, and migration of CBTC signalling systems. You will play a pivotal role in defining system architecture, managing interfaces, overseeing suppliers, and ensuring the CBTC solution supports reliable, high-performance driverless operations (UTO).
This role requires deep CBTC expertise, strong systems thinking, and proven experience working on brownfield metro upgrades.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the transition and integration from existing signalling systems to CBTC, covering planning, risk assessment, testing, and commissioning.
- Define and manage the CBTC system architecture, ensuring alignment with project, operational, and safety requirements.
- Develop generic CBTC signalling functions using reference solutions from existing or developing metro systems.
- Define system design elements including concept design, functional requirements, performance requirements, and integration strategies for CBTC and ATS.
- Develop and implement migration strategies that minimise operational disruption during changeover.
- Lead risk identification and mitigation related to CBTC and ATS design, interfaces, testing, and migration.
- Manage supplier activities, including tendering support, technical evaluations, design review, testing, and delivery oversight.
- Identify, define, and manage interfaces between CBTC, legacy signalling, rolling stock, ATS, telecoms, and control room systems.
- Coordinate integration with rolling stock, control rooms, and legacy systems, ensuring full operational compatibility.
- Support the development and refinement of the Concept of Operations, accounting for CBTC system characteristics.
- Define control room requirements in alignment with ATS and CBTC functionality.
- Identify and manage simulation studies to verify signalling and operational scenarios.
- Develop and monitor KPIs related to CBTC and legacy operations.
- Work closely with the Operations & Maintenance provider to ensure effective knowledge transfer, operational readiness, and maintainability.
- Oversee software development and testing, applying modern engineering and systems assurance practices.
- Promote standardisation, interoperability, and formalised interface management across all systems.
Interface with Engineering Manager (Design Manager role)
You will work closely with the Engineering Manager, who holds overall responsibility for:
- Integration and delivery of the complete driverless transportation system, including CBTC Signalling, Rolling Stock, PSIS, Telecoms, Power, and SCADA.
- Managing multidisciplinary technical and operational requirements.
- Coordinating subsystem integration through V-model and/or iterative design approaches.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- 8+ years' experience in CBTC system design, implementation, and commissioning.
- Strong expertise in CBTC technologies, including ATP, ATO, ATS, and associated communication protocols.
- Proven experience delivering UTO / driverless metro systems.
- Demonstrated experience in brownfield CBTC upgrades within live operational environments.
- Strong background in systems integration, interface management, and migration planning.
- Experience working with international suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
Desirable
Experience on major European metro programmes.
Familiarity with RAMS, safety assurance, and operational readiness activities.
Experience supporting tender evaluations and supplier selection.
Salary:
Package will depend on experience but expected to be in the region of €110,000 to €130,000 per anum plus benefits.
