An international engineering and advisory organisation is seeking an experienced Rail Signalling Technical Audit Lead to support a high-profile review of an operational metropolitan railway system.

This opportunity has arisen following a series of significant operational incidents and will focus on the independent assessment of signalling systems, operational practices, system integration and overall railway safety performance. The successful candidate will act as a senior technical advisor, providing independent recommendations to key stakeholders and supporting the development of improvement strategies across the network.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out independent technical reviews of existing railway signalling systems and operational interfaces.
  • Assess system performance, safety, operational risks and integration challenges across an active rail network.
  • Review existing standards, procedures, maintenance practices and operating methodologies.
  • Lead technical investigations into system failures, operational incidents and recurring performance issues.
  • Develop findings, recommendations and corrective action plans to enhance safety and reliability.
  • Engage with operators, maintainers, government stakeholders and technical specialists.
  • Produce clear technical reports and executive-level recommendations.
  • Support programme governance, assurance activities and stakeholder workshops.

Requirements

  • Extensive railway signalling experience gained within metro, commuter rail, mainline or high-speed rail environments.
  • Strong understanding of railway operations, system integration and operational safety.
  • Demonstrated experience in signalling design, testing & commissioning, assurance, operations or maintenance.
  • Experience carrying out technical audits, investigations, system reviews or independent assessments.
  • Ability to challenge technical assumptions and provide robust evidence-based recommendations.
  • Strong stakeholder management and reporting skills.
  • Previous experience working directly with rail operators, infrastructure managers or government clients.

Preferred Background

  • CBTC, ATP, ETCS, interlocking or train control systems experience.
  • Railway systems integration expertise.
  • Safety assurance, RAMS or independent assessment experience.
  • Previous involvement in operational railway incident investigations.
  • Experience within large-scale urban rail or commuter rail networks.
