Job Title: Senior Engineer – Land Survey
Grade: Band 3
Salary: Circa £63,000 (dependent on skill, knowledge and experience) + TfL Benefits
Contract Type: TfL Permanent / Full Time / Hybrid
Location: Stratford, E20 1JN (including various TfL sites across London)

Hybrid working, within this role enables a balance of 50% of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Overview of Role
Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in Engineering Service’s Land Survey team and, as well as maintaining legacy assets, you’ll support the delivery of new systems and solutions. There’s more to it than tubes, roads, buildings and bridges. This is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the 21st century and beyond.
Day-to-day, your focus will be on leading the delivery of survey data, drawings, models, and geospatial information that keep vital, innovative, and big-budget projects moving. You’ll manage all aspects of survey projects including client enquiries, estimating, resource planning, briefing surveyors, safety and security, progress reporting, quality assurance, and data delivery. You’ll apply your own technical expertise across a wide range of complex projects and programmes, providing trusted engineering data to make sure assets are safe, working, and compliant. With an eye on the future, you’ll be identifying and implementing innovative techniques or technologies to support continuous improvement.
Kowledge, Skills and Expeience
Knowledge
- Excellent working knowledge of land & engineering survey techniques and their practical application including;
- Railway surveying and track measurement devices (Desirable)
- Control networks and least squares adjustments
- 3D laser scanning and point cloud processing
- GNSS surveying, geodesy and grid transformations
- Good awareness of developments in measurement products and processes ensuring best practices are adopted.
- Knowledge of track construction processes including setting out methodology, track alignment and 3D machine control (Desirable)
- Knowledge of BIM and Digital Engineering
- Knowledge of relevant TfL, Network Rail, RICS, CICES and TSA standards and guidance notes.
- Awareness of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints.
- Thorough knowledge of safety management and its application within the railway, road, tunnel or river environment.
- Understanding of effective people management practices and fostering an inclusive workplace.
Skills
- A competent technical lead, able to communicate complex technical matters to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical skills with an ability to objectively investigate problems and propose solutions while maintaining balanced judgement.
- Great written communication and report writing skills.
- Outstanding stakeholder management and collaboration skills.
Experience
- Extensive experience undertaking and managing, land and engineering survey projects in railway, highway or tunnel environments.
- A demonstrable record of delivering complex projects to agreed programmes, budgets and technical specifications.
- Experience establishing robust control networks in challenging environments.
- Experience in the creation of digital datasets including 3D CAD models and point cloud data.
- Experience providing professional support to major projects and / or maintenance organisations where there are complex interfaces.
- Experience of identifying and implementing innovative techniques or technologies to support continuous improvement.
