Street Lighting Engineer

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated Street Lighting Engineer to join a growing highways and infrastructure team, supporting the delivery of street lighting and associated electrical design projects across a range of public sector and transportation schemes.

Working alongside experienced lighting professionals, you will contribute to the design, assessment and delivery of lighting solutions for highways, public realm, urban environments and associated infrastructure projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to further develop their technical expertise within a collaborative and supportive environment. The role will include a combination of office-based and site-based activities, with occasional travel to project locations as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce street lighting designs in accordance with relevant industry standards and client requirements.
• Undertake lighting calculations and modelling using Lighting Reality.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications, drawings and design documentation.
• Support the delivery of electrical designs for lighting and associated infrastructure.
• Carry out site surveys, inspections and condition assessments.
• Liaise with clients, contractors, utility providers and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Assist with feasibility studies, project estimates and scheme development.
• Support the preparation of environmental lighting impact assessments and related technical reports.
• Attend client meetings and provide technical input throughout project delivery.
  

Essential Requirements

• Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to manage workload effectively and deliver high-quality outputs with limited supervision.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, contractors and stakeholders.
• Conversant with lighting design software, particularly Lighting Reality.
• Experience or practical working knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Working knowledge of:
  • National Highways DMRB and MCHDW standards
  • BS 5489
  • BS EN 13201
  • BS 7671
  • Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) Technical Reports and guidance documents

Desirable Requirements

• Relevant engineering or electrical qualification (Certificate, Diploma, HNC, HND or equivalent).
• Completed, or currently working towards, the Institution of Lighting Professionals Exterior Lighting Diploma.
• Registered with the Engineering Council as EngTech.
• Affiliate Member (or above) of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP).

Salary & Benefits

• £30 - £40 per hour (Inside IR35), depending on experience and qualifications.
• Equivalent earning potential of approximately £62,000 - £78,000 per annum.
