Leicester Heavy Haulage began in 1971 with one vehicle and one trailer and has grown since then to twenty vehicles and fifty different trailers ranging from 13.6m Flats through to Drawbar Trailers capable of transporting heavy Abnormal Loads up to 200 Tonnes in weight.
In the 35 years since our establishment we have gained valued experience in all aspects of road haulage, specialising in the transportation of wide and heavy plant and machinery.
Over the years we have been contracted to move a wide variety of equipment from excavators to vessels, piling rigs to bridge beams and military vehicles to 90 tonne lumps of Portland Stone. We were once even contracted to transport a record breaking tuna sandwich!
The business was started by Brian Rodwell in November 1971 with a 1963 Scammel 4x2 tractor unit and a Tasker 4 in 1 trailer (30 tonnes capacity). Together with a nucleus of reliable subcontractors the company grew rapidly and the need for a base to maintain the vehicles became apparent. Brian decided to purchase a one and a quarter acre British Road Services Depot in Loughborough in 1975 for £42000. By this time the company was running 12 vehicles and 10 trailers.
We continued to subcontract loads of up to 100 tonnes and the decision was taken to avoid this by purchasing a new ERF 6x4 unit fitted with a 335 14 litre Cummins engine plated at 135 tonnes gross together with a new King two axle trailer with eight wheels across which could carry 70 tonnes.
The next major investment was the purchase of a new eight axle Cometto drawbar trailer from Italy in 1979 to move generators from Loughborough to the docks. The trailer now has additional axles and can carry up to 200 tonnes. After this trailer arrived a new ERF 6 x 4 plated at 167000kgs was purchased. This was fitted with a 350 bhp 14 litre Cummins engine and a twenty speed Spicer gearbox.
As the fleet grew ever larger yet more space was required and we decided to move to a 4 acre NCB site at Ellistown, near Coalville after a year long search. The Company moved to the site in January 1987 and in 1999 a 25000 sq ft warehouse complete with new offices was built to allow us to provide storage facilities on site.
In 2002 the assets and customer base of Wrekin Transport Services, Telford were purchased and the equipment was moved to Ellistown. This brought the size of the fleet to 25 vehicles and 50 trailers.
