Birmingham New Street Track Renewals

Birmingham New Street Track Renewals

16 Jan 2006

Last Christmas (2004) Carillion provided a complete renewal of the North End of Birmingham New Street Station tracks over a nine-day blockade.

This Christmas it was the South End on the Derby lines which underwent a significant Track Renewals programme; again over a 9 day blockade, that required the renewal of 1964 Bullhead layouts ’like for like’ using modern materials in 113A FB on timber.

The scope of the works was to renew 20 point ends, renew 4100 metres of point end and track circuit cables. The cable routes were replenished and approximately 150 metres of new cable route installed. New racking and 112 relays were also installed in the East End Relay Room.

OHLE adjusted wires to suit the new alignment and 4 new point heating strips were installed.
The method used for the removal of the track was by road rail and LEM machines. Total excavation of spoil and ballast was around 6000 tons and the method used for excavation was the use of temporary haul roads. The S&C installation was by Kirow Crane and LEM machines.

An S&C build up site at Royal Mail in Curzon Street fed LEM machines with a 400 ton Road Crane and the Kirow was then used to unload the S&C on site. For the S&C to be loaded on to the LEMs OHLE had to be slued to allow track panels to be fitted through the wires.

The works were controlled, managed and delivered with clockwork precision by the Integrated Management team of Carillion Rail and Network Rail.
