Birthday Celebrations at Fawley Hill
22 Jun 2006
Sir William McAlpine, the man who rescued the Flying Scotsman and helped set up the Railway Heritage Trust, celebrates his 70th birthday this year.
Grateful friends and relatives joined Lady Judy McAlpine to give Sir William a surprise party at Fawley Hill, the family home.
Rail legend Sir ‘Bill’ has helped scores of railway organisations and causes. An energetic and humorous man, his career spans the steam age and the present world of private railways. He has helped retain something of the elegance of an earlier age.
The private railway at Fawley bears testimony to this. Railway communities around the country have joined Lady Judy in toasting Sir William’s health. Read his interview with Andy Milne on pages 16 & 17 of the June RailStaff Newspaper Issue 103.
