Bluebell Founder Celebrates Century
Bernard Holden, founder member and long term supporter of the Bluebell Railway, celebrated his 100thbirthday with a ride on a steam train. The former rail engineer was joined by 50 veterans, all members of the Royal Engineers Association, who formed a guard of honour. Bernard Holden MBE, President of the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society, was born at Barcombe Station in 1908. Coming from a railway family, Mr Holden went on to work in Bengal on the railways. He served with the 191 Rail OperationsCompany in India and was later commissioned in the Indian Army. ‘I’ve enjoyed my work,’ said Bernard Holden, ‘I was lucky enough to have a career I found very enjoyable.’ Mr Holden was instrumental in the formation of the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society in 1959, and was awarded the MBE in 1992 for services to railways
