Central Line tries Metronet’s New Signalling System

19 Sep 2005

The London Underground’s Central Line is trialing new remote monitoring software in a £5.6m signalling project from Metronet, developed by Transmitton Limited.

New remote monitoring on the Central lineThis is the first occasion that remote monitoring has been installed along an entire line in the UK, with the new system going in at 47 signalling equipment rooms, providing real time data.

An easy to read graphic format shows the movement of trains, changing speed codes, signal states, and route and alarm status changes. Animated mimic displays of track and signals allow engineers to replay previously logged data.

A remote access facility allows engineers to deal with a site fault from a laptop or mobile phone. The whole project is due for completion in spring 2006.

Metronet Project Manager, Howard Cocking, said: “We can now repair signalling faults more quickly, minimising passenger disruption. It’s helping to achieve a safer railway and allowing staff to spot potential failures by raising alarms when abnormal conditions are detected.”
