DLR Extension Meets Olympic Standard

Olympic travel for 2012 has taken another leap forward with the opening of the new Docklands Light Railway extension, which links up to London City Airport.

King George V is a new station, with two more added at West Silvertown and Pontoon Dock. The line connects with the tube at Canning Town.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, led the guests at the opening of the extension, who included Transport Minister Karen Buck, London 2012 chairman Lord Coe and fellow Olympic medallists Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson.

The line will play a vital part in moving spectators around Olympic sites in 2012. Trains will run every 7 to 10 minutes, with journey times from the airport to central London taking just 35 minutes. More than 8,000 residents will benefit from the new service.

Ken Livingstone said: “This is a vital new transport link which has been delivered on time and on budget. It will open up access to jobs and housing in the local area.”

Lord Coe added: “This is timely and impressive evidence of London’s ability to deliver on its promises. London will be ready to host an outstanding games, with progress on other key transport schemes well underway.”
