John Mummery to head CIRAS

18 May 2005

John Mummery is heading up the new, centralised CIRAS team based in London. John took up his new job at the end of April.

A career railwayman John first joined British Railways Southern Region at Southampton in 1962. He then held various posts at stations and depots before becoming a management trainee in 1969. He progressed through local management positions, finally becoming Managing Director of South Wales and West Railway, a post he vacated in 1997.

Since then he has worked as an operational safety consultant. John’s interests include travel, cycling and photography; he lives in Chippenham, Wiltshire and is married with two adult sons. John is a popular and widely respected figure in the rail industry.

He says, “I’m delighted with my new role and look forward to the challenges ahead. I intend to work with the team in order to offer frontline staff a better service, and managers more meaningful information they can work with.”

John’s appointment marks the end of the restructuring process that will result in CIRAS providing an improved service to frontline rail staff. One of the immediate benefits staff have already seen is the introduction of a single Freephone number and Freepost address available to members wherever they are in the country. The new system will be launched this summer, and further improvements will follow.

CIRAS is the confidential incident reporting and analysis system for the UK rail industry. It is a completely independent body that provides a way for rail industry staff to report safety concerns in confidence. CIRAS complements existing rail company reporting systems, it does not replace them.

To contact CIRAS from anywhere in the country, rail staff can now call one number 0800 0850 449 or write to Freepost CIRAS.
