Mail at Great Central
17 Aug 2005
A travelling post office was put through its paces at a recent gala at the Great Central Railway.
This included the sorting and despatching of letters on the move. Mail bags were dropped off at speed on a station platform. The TPO (Travelling Post Office) express, freight trains and passenger services made for a bumper summer gala.
Says Robert Crew, the railway’s general manager, “The TPO demonstration leaves spectators breathless. It’s an incredible spectacle from the pages of history.”
The postal train has been out of action for a year and a half while its owners, Railway Vehicle Preservations Ltd have spent hundreds of hours overhauling and repainting it. Now it’s the star of the show.
