Night Riviera
The Night Riviera sleeper service has been spruced up and reconditioned. The service is enjoying renewed interest thanks to a vociferous campaign waged by local people, rail journalists and railway staff.
It’s future guaranteed, the Penzance - London Paddington Night Riviera comprises three sleepers and three lounge cars and runs every night except Saturday. Says First Great Western’s chairman Charles Howeson, ‘We know that for many people this service is essentially a lifeline, and we have made a number of changes suggested by our regular Sleeper customers…I’m pleased that we have been able to involve them and improve the on-board facilities for the better. We recognise the convenience of being ableto make an overnight journey to those who live in and visit the far South West, with the valuable time saving that is achieved. Our aim now is to grow thebusiness on the service and, as a first step to achieve this, we have been able to secure an additional carriage which will enable us to attract more customers.’
18 Mark III coaches make up the stock and were refurbished at Wolverton works.
