Secret RailwaysBirse Rail has won a contract from British Rail to keep an eye on closed branch lines, disused building and bridges.
BR may be no more but British Railways Board Residuary Ltd is responsible for 900 structures as well as miles of private roads and footpaths. Birse has successfully secured the renewal of the Southern Area Examination Contract of Closed Branch Lines for BRB (Residuary) Ltd, valued at approximately £275,000 per annum. Birse Rail’s periodic examinations will provide essential information on the condition of the closed line structures such as bridges, tunnels and retaining walls. The bulk of the everyday work will comprise structural examinations supplemented by vegetation clearance and minor repairs. The contract will be run and delivered by the Birse Rail Consultancy Team based in Redhill, Surrey.
