Swindon Visit For McNulty

Swindon Visit For McNulty

10 Feb 2005

Tony McNulty MP, Minister of State for Transport, visited Swindon recently to mark the completion of a two year, £9 million project, to improve the town’s railway station. Following the completion of Platform 4 and new stairs up to Platform 3, engineers at Swindon have now installed a disabled ramp up to Platform 4 enabling direct wheelchair access between the disabled car park and station. The station’s entrance has been upgraded along with better emergency egress from the station. The station forecourt has been overhauled to upgrade pedestrian access and the subway has been refurbished.

Says Peter Leppard, Acting Western Route Director, ’This project...has vastly improved Swindon station. It took a great deal of work over a long period of time and we hope it will be appreciated by Swindon’s rail passengers.’ Network Rail contributed £2.8 million to the project with £5.6 million provided by the SRA and £0.55 million by First Great Western.

Bideem Rail, a member of John Sisk Group Companies, installed the drainage, floor paving and wall and ceiling cladding throughout the subway. Bideem also remodelled the station forecourt and designed and constructed the new station entrance. Kent PHK Ltd is in the process of upgrading the alarm system.
