Balfour Beatty VINCI’s Labour Desk has exciting opportunities for 20 Apprentice Groundworkers to join our teams around Birmingham working on HS2.

Role Purpose:

As an apprentice groundworker, you will go through a structured apprenticeship which will give you the skills required to enable you to interpret drawings and work with engineers to prepare sub-surfaces, install roads, lay slabs, kerbs and gauge, mix and lay concrete and mortar.

You will be working, earning and learning on a full-time basis alongside experienced teams who will help you to develop your skills in a busy construction site environment.

What you'll be doing:

  • You will be working 4 days a week out on site assisting in building the largest infrastructure project in the UK.
  • Locating and excavating buried utility services.
  • Excavating and preparing the ground using materials such as stone.
  • Use and maintain power tools and equipment.
  • Access, interpret and use drawings and specifications.
  • Undertake and attend all off the job training at work/training locations to ensure development of practical skills, knowledge and behaviours. (1 day per week).
  • Create and maintain up-to-date evidence portfolio to support performance reviews and successful entry to End Point Assessment.

Who we're looking for:

  • Individuals who want to progress a career in the construction industry who are prepared to work flexibly outdoors whatever the weather.
  • People who enjoy working as part of a team operating in a reliable, safe and productive manner.
  • Previous experience is not essential - all training will be provided.
  • Qualifications – you need to have achieved Maths and English GCSE Grades 3-9 or D-A or be prepared to attain this level.

Overview

  • Apprenticeship Standard: Groundworker Level 2 attending training and gaining skills and experience out on the project. NVQ Level 2 will be attained at the end of the apprenticeship.
  • Additional qualifications and training can include First Aid at Work, small tools and plant operations.
  • 4 days on-job training. Day or block release (equivalent to 1 day per week).
  • Apprenticeship Length: 18 Months.
  • After the apprenticeship, long-term employment with the opportunity to progress further - potentially into work supervision, plant operation, trade qualifications and rail specific roles.
  • The opportunity to build a career in the infrastructure industry starting out on one of Europe’s most exciting and complex infrastructure project.
