Train Borne Survey Technician
Location: Cambridge
The role
Due to growth of our rail services, Fugro are now recruiting for a Site Technician to join our team in Cambridge. Your main responsibilities will be logistical planning and collecting data using our train borne RILA survey system.
Whilst supported by the wider team, as part of your role, you will also be responsible for routine safety checking of the survey equipment, occasional fault finding and download of survey data. The nature of the role will also mean than that you need to liaise with clients and colleagues from Network Rail and the train and fright operating companies on an ongoing basis.
The role is predominantly U.K. based but it may be necessary to occasionally make short duration trips to European counties depending on current workload.

Who you’ll be working with:
The role will bring you into contact with a range of stakeholders both internal and external:
Internal
- Whilst this role relates specifically to the railway, you will physically work within a team of likeminded individuals who investigate, assesses and survey a range of structures in the built environment using a range of technologies
- Your day to day activities will be manged by our railway operations team
External
- The nature of the work means we need to work in close cooperation with the railway maintainer (often Network Rail) as well as colleagues from the train and fright operating companies
Here’s what a typical day would be like:
You are unlikely to have many typical days. However, activities core to this role will include:
- Assisting the operations team to prepare logistical plans for data capture
- Liaising with train planners and finalising various data capture plans
- Checking / contributing to relevant safety and site briefing information
- Performing routine maintenance and calibration of equipment
- Performing pre-survey checks on equipment
- Mobilisation and mounting of survey equipment of train
- Monitoring performance of equipment during surveys
- De-mounting / de-mobilisation of equipment
- Download and transmission of survey data
- Completion of relevant site logs/records
- Working with remote colleagues to fault find should problems with the equipment arise
Who we’re looking for:
Essential
- Excellent communication skills
- Full U.K. Driving Licence
- Some commercial or academic experience of surveying, mobile data capture techniques or railway assessment
- The ability to travel and stay away from home
- Be able to pass a railway Medical and Drugs & Alcohol assessment
Desirable
- Previous experience in the rail industry
- Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering
- Aptitude for mechanical or electronic fault finding
- Personal track safety (PTS) certification
- CSCS
