Stadler Rail Service UK Limited (SRS UK) is a subsidiary of Stadler. SRS UK provides a train maintenance service for a growing number of clients in the UK. In the next few years over 150 new Stadler trains will be joining the UK Rail Network which signifies the start of an exciting future for Stadler in the UK. Our current depot locations are in Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle and Norwich offering a wide scope of opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in the UK Rail Industry.
We are looking to recruit a System Technician on a full-time permanent basis at our Newcastle site. The starting salary for this role is £43,281 and once competent will increase to £57,132, inclusive of 20% shift allowance. This role will report into the Fleet Duty Manager/Production Manager and will support the overall production team to successfully deliver an effective maintenance service.
Your duties:
- Demonstrating leadership, commitment and drive in the implementation of the overall MMA and TSA contract responsibilities to ensure that a positive, co-operative and dedicated contribution within all functions responsible for the success of the Maintenance contracts
- Lead and supervise the production team, providing the business with the contractual levels of performance including but not limited to; safety, availability, reliability, comfort and train presentation
- Provide robust leadership, supervision and support through a base professional production delivery know-how and competency, people and product safety culture coupled with a continual improvement mindset and client and end user focussed attitude
- Must be able to act independently and as part of a wider team, make decisions and set priorities while contributing to the companies KPI’s and values
- Day to day supervision of production personnel as well as that of visitors and sub-contractors
- Work where required from the Nexus Control Room providing support and advice to in service faults and failures
- Operate as part of a 24/7 roster
- Carry out fault diagnosis, maintenance and all manner of repairs; provide technical know-how and know-why
- Carry out maintenance activities in support of the maintenance plan including planned, corrective, overhaul and extra work
- Preparation and installation of modifications to trains in compliance with the appropriate guidelines and statutory provisions
- The post designate may develop one or more component / system specialisations
- Competence in reprofiling (wheel lathe) operations
- Capability of operating in role one grade below i.e. VMI Technician
Personnel:
- On site supervision of production personnel to include; VMI Technicians, Operations Technicians, Electrical Technicians, Mechanical Technicians, Traincare Technicians, Assistant Technicians and Traincare Operatives
- On site supervision of all visitors to site including sub-contractors
- Allocation of work to personnel in accordance with maintenance plans (including planned, corrective, overhaul and extra work)
- Ensure all personnel allocated to a task are competent to do so in accordance with the competence management system. Support personnel to develop and maintain competence
- Support and mentor new starters with initial, on the job or enhanced training including assessments
Core:
- To attend performance meetings, both internal and external, to ensure correct representation from Stadler regarding performance and delay attribution
- Competence in manual point switching, panel operation, blocking and depot isolation procedures
- Competence in operational procedures; shunting, overhead crane operation and slinging, use of the component drop, FLT operation and cleaning of assets and components
- Competence in train presentation procedures; duty cleans, graffiti removal and window replacements
- Support the business in ensuring trains are provided as and when required, meeting all criteria in the areas of product and people safety, reliability, train presentation and in line with the relevant environmental legislation. This may include allocating vehicles to specified diagrams as requested by the customer
- Respond and support the customer with in service faults and breakdowns and lead in a “first response” situation should the need arise. This may include the requirement to be part of a standby / on call roster
- Data input and analysis into electronic management systems including SRMS and others utilised by Stadler Rail Service UK
- Ensure all documentation (e.g. job cards, defect logs, component labels, work orders, failure reports and technical requests) associated with fleet maintenance activities are completed accurately, both paper and computer based
- Support with materials management, ensuring stock withdrawals are to the correct cost code and that materials returned to the stores for warranty or repair are done so efficiently
- Maintain own competencies, ensuring any required, upcoming or overdue are planned and addressed in a timely manner
- Ensuring industry, engineering and production best practice is adhered to at all times. Supporting with the development and implementation of standards and procedures in accordance with legal, legislative and moral obligations of Stadler
- Tools, equipment, facilities and assets interface to ensure issues are reported and corrected effectively through regular checks, audits and inspections
- Embed a zero harm culture within the production function
- Responsible for ensuring engineering, hygiene, tool and calibration management procedures are adhered to
- Initiate and where authorised implement action to prevent the occurrence of product non-conformities (non-compliance), rail safety and compliance, Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) incidents, process deficiencies or system deficiencies. This includes the reporting of any such incidents in a timely and thorough manner
- Responsible for adhering to safety / quality systems and support the implementation thereof by supporting appropriate inspections / checks as required or directed including the completion of “in process checks”, “safety tours” and general condition assessments, ensuring work is done safely and to specification, to ensure a safe and reliable product
- Assist with the annual identification and quantification of risks in order to complete Risk Assessments (RA’s) and the risk register
- Demonstrate a value based behaviour, setting the example for others to follow and challenging any values or behaviours deemed inappropriate

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Essential:
- Qualification or equivalent experience in a Rail and Depot environment
- Formal education at least to NVQ Level 4 or equivalent in an appropriate subject manner
- Electrical, network / software and mechanical time served or equivalent qualification with suitable shop floor experience
- ILM Level 3 Leadership and Management
- Proven experience in leading teams and engaging with stakeholders
- Ability to work in a demanding environment and make decisions to tight deadlines
- Can demonstrate a customer driven attitude focused on quality
- Flexible and willing to support colleagues with good inter-personal and communication skills
- Proven experience of working in a changing environment and leading that change
- Proven ability to understand reports, recommendations and investigations that may have impact to the safe and cost effective production operation and customer operation
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to complex discussions with key stakeholders, including with internal functional areas of the business, as well as external agencies
- Ability to understand and interpret legislation and standards relating to people and product health and safety
- Demonstrate a passion for continual improvement, operational excellence and end user experience
- Good level of ICT skill including Microsoft packages
- Must have or be willing to become a statutory first aid at work person, fire marshal / fire warden
- Competency must be demonstrated in Personal Track Safety (PTS) and Rolling Stock maintenance standards
- Medically fit and subject to drugs and alcohol testing both random and “for cause”
- Full UK Driving License
- May be required to work on a temporary basis at other Stadler or customer locations
Desirable:
- Proven extensive experience in an operational transport and production environment with knowledge of Rolling Stock units
- Knowledge and experience in advanced Lean, Kaizen, 6S and other modern production techniques
- Knowledge and experience in conducting and contributing to complex root cause investigations
- Strong knowledge, experience and understanding of risk and safety in the workplace, within a transport environment and from a production perspective
- Proven experience of identifying, assessing and mitigating all manner of risks and documenting risk registers to demonstrate compliance and become the basis of safe systems of work
- Formal education to NVQ Level 5 or equivalent in an appropriate subject manner
