Bridges - Civil Engineer (Examinations & Inspections)

What is the purpose of this role?
Amey undertake Structural Examinations, Structural Assessments, Operational Property Inspections, Earthworks Examinations, Technical Monitoring and provide Rapid Response services for Network Rail in several routes throughout the United Kingdom.
We are looking for a Civil Engineer with rail experience to join our team in Southern Region, to undertake the engineering review of completed examination reports, detailed and visual examinations of bridges, viaducts, retaining walls, ancillary assets and tunnels.
What will this role involve?
- Ensure that safety is always the priority. Promote safe working practices, ensuring full implementation and compliance with Key Processes and Safety Responsibility Statement.
- Support the Regional Structures Engineer in technical and engineering issues.
- Undertake structure examinations and tunnel examinations (STE4/STE6) of Network Rail’s civil assets and submit reports to meet contract timescales and Network Rail standards.
- Carry out Technical Monitoring of structures, using total station surveying equipment as required.
- Undertake the process of engineering (STE2) review and submission of examination reports, including risk scoring and recommendations, in accordance with the contract specification. This requires a sound understanding of different material types, repair techniques and structural mechanics.
- Support the Regional Structures Engineer by striving to apply a consistent and unified approach to reviewing in line with the technical specification and in the application of risk scoring.
- Prepare remits/drawings for intrusive and non-intrusive HCE (hidden critical element)
- Undertake the role as On-Call Duty Manager on a c1:8 rota. This is to provide engineering support to Examiners attending bridge strikes or following identification of a defect requiring urgent attention.
- Undertake site observations/audits of completed reports as part of Engineering Assurance.
- Undertake special investigations as directed by the Regional Structures Engineer.
- Ensure that the technical issues and best practice are identified by the engineering team during the review / assurance process or report rejections.
- Attend and support technical briefings to the route examination teams.
- Liaise with the route examination teams in order to ensure that technically compliant reports are produced in a consistent manner with minimal rejections.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with Network Rail, in order that their technical requirements are fully understood and implemented.
- Maintain regular liaison with all key stakeholders on project progress, conducting regular reviews with Network Rail and your team.
What are we looking for?
Essential Skills, Qualifications and Training:
- Must have experience of working in a Civil Engineering role within the rail industry.
- Knowledge and understanding of Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental procedures.
- Degree or HNC/HND in civil or structural engineering.
- Computer literate with a full working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
- Working towards Institution of Civil Engineering IEng. professional qualification.
Desirable Skills, Qualifications and Training:
- Demonstrable railway industry experience in structures examination, maintenance or assessment.
- STE2 competent.
- STE4 competent.
- STE6 Tunnel Engineer.
- Experienced coach and/or mentor.
