About the role

BWB Consulting has an exciting opportunity for a Civil Design Engineer to join our rail group. The role will be working with our nationwide rail team.

The team delivers a wide variety of engineering services to a varied client base, both national and international. The rail group provide a number of engineering services at various stages of our clients’ projects from inception through to commissioning.

Working on challenging and multiple projects simultaneously, you will have experience in undertaking preliminary and detailed design of civil engineering infrastructure for a rail contractor or Network Rail. This may include lineside civils, ancillary civils, foundations, retaining walls, drainage and above or below ground structures.

About the team

The Rail team provides a comprehensive design and advisory service focused on meeting the engineering challenges involved in servicing the infrastructure requirements of renewal, enhancement and turnkey projects. We work across all types of railway systems and our clients range from local developers through to international contractors working for public sector bodies. About you

You will have a keen interest in developing your understanding and ability in civil engineering design and a willingness to research and take on new challenges. You will be able to work independently and use your engineering judgement to tackle day to day problems, whilst keeping project managers informed of your progress.

You will understand the multi-disciplinary nature of projects from initial stage, through to completion and a willingness to understand more about other discipline roles on projects.

You will understand the importance of working with different types of client in a complex industry – our clients include developers, local authorities and contractors, all of whom have different expectations and requirements from you and the projects you will work on.

You will be expected to have the following personal attributes and skills:

  • Technical experience within the field of Civil Engineering design, covering several aspects of preliminary and detailed design of civil engineering infrastructure.
  • An aptitude using our industry standard design software packages including AutoCAD and Microstation.
  • The use of the Microsoft Office Suite of software, including Excel.
  • Experience liaising with both internal and external bodies, including but not limited to planning authorities and statutory undertakers.
  • Experience liaising with other consultants such as engineers, planners, project managers and directly with Clients.
  • The ability to undertake site surveys on track where required.
  • A desire to obtain professional engineering qualifications.
  • Commercial awareness within your field of experience.
  • Willingness to develop an outward facing capacity as a design team representative in dealings with clients on technical matters.
  • A willingness to delegate design responsibility to others and act in a mentoring role to less experienced staff.
  • Good communicator, both written and oral, with the ability to adapt communication style to suit different circumstances.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships at all levels both internally and externally.
  • A ‘self-starter’ with drive, positivity and enthusiasm and a strong desire to succeed.
