Civil Design Engineer in United Kingdom

Job Overview:
We are seeking a talented Civil Design Engineer with a passion for the rail industry. The ideal candidate will have experience designing civil engineering solutions for rail infrastructure projects, ensuring designs comply with safety, technical, and environmental standards. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the successful delivery of key rail projects across the UK. There are roles across the whole of the UK with various clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed civil engineering designs for rail infrastructure projects, including stations, bridges, embankments, tunnels, drainage systems, and other railway structures
  • Ensure designs are compliant with Network Rail standards and specifications, as well as health and safety regulations
  • Work closely with project managers, structural engineers, and other disciplines to ensure design integration across the project lifecycle
  • Perform site inspections and surveys to collect data and assess existing conditions
  • Prepare design documentation, reports, and technical drawings using CAD and other design software
  • Identify and mitigate potential design risks, proposing solutions to overcome technical challenges
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure smooth project progression
  • Manage design approvals and submissions to relevant authorities, ensuring adherence to project timelines
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, best practices, and innovations in civil engineering design

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • Proven experience as a Civil Design Engineer within the rail sector, ideally working on Network Rail projects
  • Proficiency in civil engineering design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and BIM tools
  • Strong understanding of Network Rail standards (GRIP, PACE) and industry regulations
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • Attention to detail with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Knowledge of rail-specific civil design elements such as track alignment, drainage systems, and structural integrity

Qualifications:

  • Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with a recognized institution (e.g., ICE)
  • Project management skills and experience with NEC3/NEC4 contracts is desirable
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification is advantageous but not essential
