The Central Rail Systems Alliance is formed by partners Network Rail, Balfour Beatty, Atkins and TSO. The CRSA is responsible for the delivery of multi-disciplinary railway upgrade projects on the North West & Central and Eastern regions of Network Rail’s recently devolved routes. The programme of works delivered by the teams is valued at £2bn and manages the development, design and delivery of Switches and Crossings and Plain Line renewals as its core business but is also responsible for the delivery of major enhancement projects.
We are looking to recruit a Civil Engineers at all levels (Design, Senior and Principal) to join our Central Rail Systems Alliance team delivering Multi-Million rail Core and Enhancement projects and programmes based either in the Eastern or North West & Central Regions.
The Role:
Using your technical and delivery skills, you will be responsible for delivering a variety of civil design packages for both core renewals and enhancement schemes. You will work closely with other disciplines to ensure a fully integrated design is achieved.
Your duties will include supporting the management of both individual design packages and entire projects, supporting project resourcing and financial control to ensure our schemes are delivered profitably, to programme, and in accordance with quality assurance systems.
You will have a background in civil engineering design, and an interest in the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects within the rail environment. You’ll be familiar with working in large, geographically dispersed multidisciplinary design teams on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility through to detailed design.
Qualifications:
- BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent. Or the desire to work towards this.
- Incorporated/Chartered status and corporate membership of the ICE or IstructE or the desire to work towards.
- The role will be varied, requiring a balance of relevant industry experience, technical ability, communication and stakeholder management skills.
Essential Criteria:
- Ability to oversee the production of and review high quality design documentation including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications.
- Undertake technical reviews of designs.
- Able to build strong working relationships with Assurance and Construction teams.
- Good understanding of relevant design standards (e.g., Eurocodes, & Network Rail standards).
- Ability to develop and agree scopes and manage budgets, programme and quality of deliverables.
- Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of clients, stakeholders and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Ability to challenge ideas and ensure robustness of solutions proposed.
- Can innovate and lead others to innovative solutions to deliver improvements.
- Enabling the development of the CRSA engineering, design, digital engineering and quality people in line with their personal, project and business objectives, including identifying and implementing training to ensure quality is achieved.
- Experience of multidisciplinary design.

- Relevant industry experience in major construction and/or infrastructure projects.
