We are looking to recruit a Principal Engineer to join our Rail Civils team in Swindon. The role would ideally suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic and diverse organisation – career progression opportunities are widely available and fully encouraged. We are able to offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, some of our projects span a couple of weeks while others are multi million pound projects, such as Old Oak Common, that span over several years and involve AECOM resources working throughout the UK and overseas. Our current project works include lineside civils, station refurbishments, station footbridges, bridge deck replacements and new stations. You will have the opportunity to work with our other in-house design teams in fully integrated multi-disciplinary environment.

AECOM’s Swindon office has recently undergone a major refurbishment providing our staff great working conditions within the office whilst the team is also able to work remotely to provide the team with the right home/work life balance.
The successful candidate will be expected to have detailed civil design experience, within the rail sector. Ideally the experience will encompass all stages of the design process from feasibility to construction. As a principal engineer you will be responsible for technical delivery of your projects whilst leading a team of engineers and apprentices. You will be responsible for mentoring your own team through on the job training as well supporting them through their career development. You will be expected to fulfil the role of design Contractor’s Responsible Engineer on projects and as your experience progresses you will have the opportunity to undertake the CEM role.

Job Duties

  • Act as a technical lead for a team of engineers and ensuring that the technical outputs are delivered to the highest standards in accordance with the AECOM quality management system
  • Act in the role of design Contractor’s Responsible Engineer
  • Provide direction and technical advice to junior project team members, taking a proactive role in developing team members to their full potential, developing team spirit and collaborative behaviours
  • Manage personal/team budgets and resources to achieve financial targets.
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team environment.
  • Provide assistance to senior management in the preparation of technical and financial proposals.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree qualification (or equivalent experience) in Civil Engineering or similar
  • Design experience in a range of rail civil engineering projects
  • Suitable experience of design software

Preferred Requirements

  • The ideal candidate would be a Chartered Civil Engineer.
