Principal Civil Engineer in Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom

What is the purpose of this role?

Lead the technical development and output of a railway civil engineering design team to ensure:

  • Compliance with all relevant technical standards – British Standards, Eurocodes, Network Rail Company Standards, Railway Group Standards, etc.
  • Delivery of all the specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the Client’s specifications, ensuring all project requirements and are fully met.
  • Technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget.
  • Provide advice and guidance for less experienced staff, together with Delegated Engineer guidance and the active encouragement of professional development.
  • Excellent relationships are maintained with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company and the delivery of projects to the Client.

Tasks (Needs To Do):

  • Review and approve feasibility studies, outline and detailed designs in accordance with the Client’s requirements and relevant design standards to achieve cost effective, buildable solutions, especially for complex and multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Review the preparation and monitoring of the budget for projects including the planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances.
  • Have extensive knowledge in relevant railway Group and Company standards, British Standards, and Eurocodes, as well as relevant statutory processes.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the GRIP process and a comprehensive understanding of the requirements and deliverables for the design input for all GRIP stages.
  • Review and direct CAD technicians in the development of drawings, details, library of standard details etc.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship in the use of appropriate technical / engineering and analysis software including Superstress, MIDAS, Scale and similar.
  • Maintain, develop and improve good working relationships with the Client and other interested parties.
  • Undertake a wide range of design work, review and technical approval, on all aspects of the railway civil engineering infrastructure, including but not limited to, platforms, lineside equipment bases & structures, footbridges, over and under-bridges, buildings, etc.
  • Undertake and review project planning, programming, cost control and administration; and associated reporting on delivery, resources and budget.
  • Enter into detailed technical discussions with approval authorities, consenting bodies, Clients, Contractors, Amey staff, Third Parties and other stakeholder groups, especially for complex projects.
  • Review and approve design calculations, contract documentation, drawings, technical documents and project reports complying with current standards.
  • Attend internal and external project meetings, act as Civil Engineering design CRE on multi-disciplinary projects; including attending IDC meetings, liaise with supply chain and other third party organisations.
  • Maintain high technical standards, consistent with the project brief.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation through the design and work stages, and lead by example with respect to Health, Safety, Welfare Environment and CDM. Undertake bidding, business development and client relationship management as required.
  • Disseminate and brief colleagues on standard updates, project requirements, work activities etc.
  • Review and approve effective, value for money and innovative design solutions.
  • Develop and supervise, mentor and support a variety of project team members.
  • Assist with competency appraisal processes of colleagues.
  • Review and approve the presentation of engineering options and solutions.
  • Review and approve feasibility studies, appraisal / assessment reports and other written documents.
  • Review and approve assessment calculations, design calculations and structural analysis.
  • Review and approve design concepts, design details, drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
  • Hold the PTS competence, and be able to carry out site visits and surveys as per project requirements.
  • Be prepared to be trained and discharge Responsible Manager duties for Safe Systems of Work planning etc.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the Client and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Complete performance appraisals with direct reports (if applicable) and provide learning and development opportunities where possible.
  • Lead by example with respect to the Integrated Management System, especially the Project Execution Plan, Work Authorisation Form etc. and identifying and managing change.
  • Identify and share best practice.
  • Confident and assured technical and marketing presentations to Clients.

Relationships

  • Report into the Principal Engineering Manager and relevant Delivery Managers, Project Managers and/or Contractor’s Engineering Manager.
  • Instruct, supervise and manage less experienced staff and appraise all direct reports.
  • Liaise with specialist members of the Project Team, including other disciplines, Client Project Managers and other Amey staff, as required.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external Clients and stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with other Business Streams, Service Line teams and Divisions within Amey.
  • Support Technical Directors, Hub owners and Professional Excellence Manager regarding standards of deliverables, project planning, etc.
  • Be prepared to line manage all grades of staff.
  • Liaise with the Professional Head of Civil Engineering regarding the technical briefing of colleagues.

Essential skills, experience and qualifications (Needs to know):

  • A Chartered Engineer via ICE or IStructE.
  • Ability to constructively and diplomatically review and approve the work of others, including calculations, drawings, reports, proposals, bids etc.
  • Ability to technically manage and lead a team in the successful delivery of multi-disciplinary railway projects.
  • Extensive experience as a Contractor’s Responsible Engineer, or ability to perform the role without further training.
  • Strong understanding of draughting and BIM software and steelwork and reinforced concrete detailing.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering management.
  • Computer literate and thoroughly conversant with MS Office suite including Skype, Yammer and Sharepoint, and have experience in structural analysis software (Super STRESS, LUSAS, SCALE and Archie) and Project Management software (Primavera or MS Project).
  • Excellent experience of the co-ordination of the design process and team management.
  • Excellent communication skills dealing with Clients, Contractors, supply chain, other parties, colleagues and disciplines.
  • Client focused approach to service delivery and project deadlines.

Essential characteristics (Needs to have):

  • At least ten years relevant, post-graduate experience in Civil Engineering railway design and or construction.
  • Desire to develop existing skills and enhance team capability. A proven ability to lead a team with a dedicated approach to meet project deadlines.
  • Flexible approach and willingness to develop career and those of colleagues.
  • Self-motivated individual with excellent organisation and communication skills.

Safety Responsibility Statement

  • To attend and participate in Amey quarterly Safety/Team briefings.

  • To maintain your version of your rule book together with appropriate records for PTS log book entries etc.
  • To keep and present your Sentinel card whenever on site.
  • To use only valid tools and equipment that you are trained and competent to use.
