Principal Engineer

Working within our Rail Civils team allows you to work on a range of projects including ancillary civil structures, bridges, footbridges and railway assets at railway stations and depots in the UK to complex bridges on multi-billion pound infrastructure projects in Israel and Australia.

What you’ll be doing

  • Providing a comprehensive design and advisory service focused on meeting the engineering challenges involved in servicing the infrastructure requirements of renewal, enhancement and turnkey projects
  • Working with the Rail team to provide a comprehensive design and advisory service focused on meeting the engineering challenges involved in servicing the infrastructure requirements of renewal, enhancement and turnkey projects.
  • Technical design of railway civil Engineering structures including but not limited to: station platforms, station furnitire, overhead line structures, signalling structures, telecoms structures and general lineside structures.
  • Design of Bridge Structures
  • Managing and leading teams
  • Developing the team including engineers and technicians
  • Applying understanding of BIM
  • Interfacing and considering other design disciplines such as track, electrical, mechanical, architecture etc
  • Communicating with clients who include local developers through to international contractors working for public sector bodies.
  • Working on projects applying previous project experience from project inception to construction

What you’ll bring

  • Previous project experience from project inception to construction
  • Experience of railway design projects and general bridge design would be advantageous
  • Experience of using ProjectWise and Eb would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of Network Rail standards beneficial
  • Strong IT skills and be fully conversant with our industry standard design software packages such as Tedds and STAAD
  • Ability to work independently, and manage others, to produce designs for approval and construction
  • Knowledge and experience of current health and safety legislation including CDM Regulations.
  • Ability to use design standards and technical guidance to produce designs with respect to rail projects
  • Knowledge and experience working with Eurocodes and Network Rail standards.
  • Appreciation of the other rail disciplines and the wider aspects of design and construction
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft software packages including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Experience managing projects using engineering judgement
  • Knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and how it is applied.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Incorporated or chartered status with a relevant engineering institution (eg. ICE)
  • Experience as Contractors responsible (CRE) under Network rail projects would be advantageous.
