We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Principal Civil Engineer to join our dynamic CAFA team at York – Hybrid working 37.5 hrs per week.
In this role, you will Provide technical leadership delivering the assessment of rail structures, including Underline bridges, Overline bridges, Footbridges, Undercrofts, Canopies, Train and Depot sheds, Side Bridges, Tunnels (that directly support external traffic loads) and other structures. Ensuring compliance with Company and Network Rail management process and systems, aiming to ensure the highest standards of safety.
This role offers you the unique opportunity to be a part of a varied team supporting a full range of Engineering technical grades, whilst continually learning and developing your own skills further.
What You’ll Do:
- Prepare and check technical plans, calculations, reports, and drawings to ensure they meet technical standards and client needs.
- Carry out site work inspections and provide on-site technical leadership when needed.
- Ensure high technical standards and compliance with health and safety, environmental rules, and other relevant regulations.
- Guide and mentor junior staff in producing technical drawings, reports, and calculations, and support their training and professional development.
- Maintain good relationships with clients and third parties to uphold the company's reputation.
- Take on specific contractual responsibilities, such as being a Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) or Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE), when required.
- Ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance within the CAFA business.
- Help prepare cost estimates and ensure successful delivery of projects on time, within budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.

What You’ll Bring:
- Extensive experience in railway structure inspection, assessment and design schemes.
- Strong experience in the assessment / design of all major construction materials, including historical materials, e.g. cast iron, wrought iron.
- Proven track record in the training, mentoring and development of staff to achieve appropriate professional qualifications and career ambitions.
- In depth knowledge of current and relevant health and safety, environmental and sustainability legislation.
- Previous exposure to local and national Clients, e.g. Network Rail Routes, Local Authorities, Network Rail National, Principal Contractors.
- Strong experience in the delivery of assessments and/or structure designs through Network Rail national standards and/or Highways England.
- Demonstrable experience successfully leading teams in the production of contract specific deliverables to programme, budget and quality.
- Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject.
- Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer (CEng / IEng through ICE, CIHT or IStructE) or working towards.
- Assessor and Checker roles to NR/L3/CIV/035.
- CRE(A) role to NR/L3/CIV/035, as required
