Your New Role:

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Trainee Civil Engineer - Structures to join our CEFA team in Motherwell – Hybrid working.

CEFA - Civils Examinations Framework Agreement - Amey has been working in partnership with Network Rail since 2009 to deliver the Civils Examinations and Assessment Framework Agreements. We are responsible to undertake the examination and assessment of railway structures across the UK. Across the country our teams deliver several different workstreams within Civil Examinations/Assessments; broadly categorised into structures examinations, structures assessments, operational property inspections/assessments and earthworks examinations. By gathering intelligence around the condition of them and how they are developing and changing, this will form the basis of decision making for future intervention and safety of the assets to prevent functional failure. These assets are part of the heritage of our country, and we need to ensure that they are safe to meet today’s needs as well as tomorrow’s. We also operate a 24/7 365 days a year on-call service so that we can respond promptly to any incidents and inspect the site to ensuring we keep trains and passengers moving.

Trainee Civil Engineer - Structures plays an important part to evaluate structure examination reports for onward submission to Network Rail and to undertake site examinations of culverts, bridges, viaducts, retaining walls, ancillary assets and tunnels. (Full training will be given to ensure you meet the requirements of Network Rail’s Examination and Competence Standards).

The standard hours of work are 37.5 hours per week. (Will be part of a on call rota in the future)

You will be responsible for:
  • Ensure that safety is always the priority. Promote safe working practices, ensuring full implementation and compliance with Key Processes and Safety Responsibility Statement below
  • Support the Professional Head - Structures in technical and engineering issues
  • Undertake structure examinations (STE4) of Network Rail’s civil assets and submit reports to contract guidelines (28 day KPI) and to Network Rail standards. Undertake tunnel examinations (STE6) as required
  • Carry out Technical Monitoring of structures, using total station surveying equipment as required
  • Undertake the process of engineering (STE2) review and submission of examination reports within your region, including risk scoring and recommendations, in accordance with the contract specification and timescales
  • Ensure that the technical issues and best practice are identified by the engineering team during the review / assurance process or report rejections
  • Attend and support technical briefings to the route examination teams
  • Liaise with the route examination teams in order to ensure that technically compliant reports are produced in a consistent manner with minimal rejections
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with Network Rail, in order that their technical requirements are fully understood and implemented
  • Maintain regular liaison with all key stakeholders on project progress, conducting regular reviews with Network Rail and your team
We want to hear from you if you have:
  • Minimum of 2/3 years of work experience in a Civil Engineering/Construction environment in the UK.
  • Willingness to learn
  • Qualified to a minimum HNC/HND level in Civil Engineering
  • Demonstrable railway industry experience in structures examination, maintenance or assessment
  • Relevant experience of working in an engineering role in a railway operating environment

In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have or are working towards / working towards IEng/CEng and have Knowledge of Network Rail’s assets and how they are managed

to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
