Commercial Manager in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

After some great projects coming on board, ADComms are currently recruiting a Commercial Manager to join the business to work on an esteemed project.

Our Head Office is based in Scunthorpe, however, the role is open to remote working with occasional travel to site/offices where required.

POSITION SUMMARY
Taking ownership in the optimisation of business performance on a prestigious project.

The right person for this role will be proactive, driven and a collaborative candidate with previous evidence of delivering well on a similar project.

  • Coordinate and manage all key commercial activities across the supply chain (procurement), business and customer requirements.
  • Issue robust compensation claims to the client (target within 1 day of issue taking place)
  • Optimised Close out compensation claims with the client within 10 days.
  • Ensure robust and timely collection and submission of evidence for payment milestones.
  • Liaise on a daily basis with PM on progress and compensation / variation activities.
  • Issue timely Early Warning Notices
  • Ensue project is delivered in line with the contractual agreements – highlighting all milestones and risks and proactively managing risk mitigation workstreams.
  • Support the PM in Managing project finances e.g. cost to date / cost of complete, value earned to dat , value yet to be delivered (against base programme)
  • Generate the cost risk log – split into labour, materials, subcontract, etc for
  • - agreed variations v cost
  • - unagreed variations v cost
  • Provide simplified commercial and contract advice and information to wider project team to optimise project performance to the contract.
  • Ensure simple effective commercial process is on place including inputs outputs required form the wider project team.
  • Manage, compile and communicate commercial contract KPIs on a RAG status each week/month as required- e.g Invoice submitted dates v contract requirement dates, invoice amount approved v invoice amount submitted, cash flow actual versus expected, WIP etc.
  • Good collaboration and communication skills required, with ability to influence and negotiate in a positive manner.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Reporting

  • Assisting the SCM in preparing an accurate and timely cost and value report at both project and business level.
  • Ensure accurate cash flow reporting takes place
  • Carry out cost management including forecasting
  • Update the monthly CTC / CVR, cost and commercial plans and have accountability, along with the project team for the commercial performance and strategy

2. Processes

  • Help ensure that commercial processes are adhered to across the business unit
  • Actively seek to improve processes and procedures by reviewing and developing operational process flows.
  • Have a good understanding of the processes and procedures used by any internal JV/Alliance that we are working with and assist in their development and improvement

3. Customer relationship

  • Ensure that any main contracts entered have terms and conditions that are appropriate for AD Comms, with commercial risks identified.
  • Ensure that the supply chain is engaged appropriately with the correct contract terms and conditions.
  • Ensure that good client relationships are fostered
  • Be responsible for subcontract letting, negotiation and financial accounting and overseeing other procurement and timely assessment of SC liabilities and payment of SC’s including consultants

4. Internal relationships

  • Effectively assist in managing the commercial team, including cost clerks and commercial support staff
  • Ensure effective interaction between the commercial team, finance team, procurement team, and the operational site teams
  • Supervise and mentor junior quantity surveyors

5. Key measures and targets

  • Accurate and timely monthly valuations (and final account), timely management of change internally and externally, timely identification and submission of EWNs and CENS, timely responses and quotation of CEs (variations and claims), accurate and timely forecasting, accurate and timely add and re-measurement to contract SMM, timely assessment and management of rolling final account and status of share or financial risks.
  • Ability to challenge resources and costs
  • Maintaining deadlines in line with monthly commercial calendar

6. Key relationships

  • Commercial Director, Senior Commercial Manager and the rest of the commercial team.
  • Business development team

Education Requirements

  • HND/degree in Quantity Surveying, or equivalent
  • Previous experience of the civil engineering and railway industry
  • Strong command of the English language

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

For the area assigned, candidate demonstrates:

  • Familiarity with NEC forms of contract and knowledge of current Construction Law
  • Extensive experience in commercial management and procurement of subcontractors, including chairing regular meetings, measurement and control cycle, certificates and accruals calculations.
  • Ability to demonstrate a good knowledge of valuation of work monthly reporting and earned value analysis.
  • Excellent team player whilst also holding the ability to work independently on own initiative
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to encourage and support junior members of the Commercial Team.
  • Ability to successfully build and maintain client relationships
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office software

Other Requirements

  • This role requires someone who can join the delivery team, be a driver in all commercial matters.
  • The individual will need to be hands on and undertake a combined SQS and CM function for a modest portfolio of projects.
  • Be pro-active in all Health, Safety & Environmental issues.
  • Ensure compliance with all the ADComms controlled documents including all the ADComms procedures.

• Provide strong leadership to the Team and manage their performance including daily, weekly, annual and monthly target setting,

• Act as a coach and mentor to the Team members
• Approve wage, bonus and commission schedules in line with budget and operating constraints
