Role Overview:
They are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Contracts Manager to oversee and manage multiple mini-projects and subcontractor railway delivery within their expanding team. The successful candidate will lead a team of over 20 professionals, manage workflows, drive efficiency, and ensure meticulous financial control. This position is key to ensuring our projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest safety standards, while also driving team development and maintaining strong client relationships.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 20+ younger members of staff / graduates, fostering growth and promoting high-performance culture.
- Subcontractor Management: Oversee the efficient delivery of subcontractor work across multiple railway projects, ensuring quality, safety, and adherence to schedules which is key to Modus Rail’s continued success.
- Project Planning: Coordinate and plan activities across multiple railway sites (and routes) using ELRs (Engineering Line References), ensuring effective track access and site availability.
- Financial Control: Overall accountability for portfolio finances. Focusing on COWD (Cost of Work Done), forecasting, applications, certifications, billings/invoicing. Provide detailed cyclical financial updates and reporting to senior team.
- Sales & Client Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, driving sales opportunities, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Workflow & Project Management Systems: Utilise workflow and project management IT systems to track project progress, manage schedules, and report performance. Ensure adherence to the baseline programme and proactively address any deviations.
- Reporting: Lead progress reporting through visual boards and dashboards, comparing planned vs. actual performance, and monitoring run rates and schedule adherence.
- Problem Solving: Resolve complex project and contract issues, working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure project success.
- Adaptivity: Stay dynamic and agile in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating the ability to learn new systems and approaches quickly.
- Compliance: Ensure all activities are conducted in full compliance with Network Rail’s safety standards and relevant industry regulations.
Skills & Experience Required:

- Proven experience managing subcontractor railway projects, including track access and planning.
- Strong leadership experience, with the ability to manage and inspire a team of 20 or more.
- Excellent knowledge of workflow and project management systems, as well as advanced Excel skills (including VLOOKUP).
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and financial management skills, with experience in forecasting and progress reporting.
- Experience in sales and client management, with the ability to develop and nurture relationships.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Strong adaptability and ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Experience in planning and delivering multiple railway site projects using ELRs.
- A meticulous approach to managing project finances and performance metrics.
