Shift Operations Team Leader

Purpose of the Role

To supervise and manage the relevant shift in the Operations Control Centre.

Key Accountabilities

  • Safety - To manage all Accidents and Incidents, ensuring correct Safety Critical Decisions are made. Ensuring the correct escalation process of Incidents and Accidents. The completion of relevant forms and their distribution together with supporting evidence.
  • Profitability - To performance monitor Freight and OTM services, disputing TRUST attribution delays thus saving Colas money on delays attributable to Network Rail. Making decisions when commercial shifts are at risk of being lost due to breakdowns or staff shortages.
  • Quality - To ensure that all reports are compiled correctly and sent in a timely manner to the correct distribution lists. To ensure quality on time information reporting to the customer on both the Freight and OTM sides of the business.
  • Respect - Treat people in a fair and consistent way. Consistently strive to understand client's needs and requirement. To ensure that all members of the Control Room are working together in a respectful way and deal with any issues that arise on shift.

Key Tasks

  • To supervise a team of Controllers including an Administrator.
  • To assist Freight, Grinder, Seasonal and OTM Control Desks.
  • To issue guidance and support to Controllers and assist in Safety Critical decision making.
  • To manage Accidents and Incidents including the escalation and associated paperwork.
  • To compile all reports for the different Business sides, Freight, OTM, Grinders, MMT, Seasonal and distribute.
  • Performance Monitoring and TRUST Delay Attribution and associated logging.
  • Face to Face Team / Safety Briefs
  • To assist in the training of New Starters on shift.
  • To complete Assessments and Skills Needs Analysis on Control Staff
  • To act as a spare Controller in the case of late notice sickness
  • To ensure that all processes, procedures and general day to day duties are being followed and carried out at all times.
  • Monitoring Control staff arrival / departure times and breaks to eliminate fatigue.
  • Ensuring all Action Logs are completed and closed out appropriately with all relevant information and reference numbers.
  • To ensure timely reporting to SCO with relevant information
  • Overall responsibility of the filing and completion of all relevant paperwork, general housekeeping of the Control Room.

Person Specification

The job holder will be experienced in working on both the Freight and OTM Control Desks and be able to work using their own initiative. They must be decision makers and natural leaders. They must be aware of all of the Colas Policies and be able to work as a team.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Experience and knowledge of the Freight side of the business
  • Experience and knowledge of the OTM side of the business
  • Ability to demonstrate a good working relationship with their team
  • Must have Leadership qualities
  • To be IT literate
