Role Profile

Working with the Telent Rail project team the Apprentice Systems Design Engineer will learn how to design the complexities of a Telecoms network system within the UK rail and metro environments. You will learn the intricacies of designing and planning different aspects needed to deliver for our high-profile clients.

Working as part of a multi-skilled technical team, you will work closely with established Systems Design Engineers to learn all aspects of designing telecommunication systems for projects within the UK rail and metro projects.

The Apprentice Systems Design Engineer role will be primarily office and remote working with occasional visits to site throughout the UK.

Typical Deliverables

Over this 18-month apprenticeship you will learn a lot:

  • How to become a systems design engineer within a real-life environment
  • How to design and plan for the installation of operational telecoms equipment across the UK rail infrastructure
  • How to design and plan for the integration of new operational telecoms equipment with existing equipment and systems
  • The methods and systems needed for accurate communication, reporting and recording of technical information
  • You will assist in the creation of design packs which may include schematics, drawings, reports and Bill of Materials.
  • To understand and adhere to the Health & Safety requirements
  • You will assist in ensuring conformity to industry and railway standards as well as ensuring that Telent have delivered against the original customer requirements.
  • You will assist in carrying out site surveys at live operational rail and metro sites as per project requirements.
  • How to work in a multitude of environments from offices, equipment rooms, trackside, stations and signalling centres
  • How to work as part of a team or work alone
  • The requirements of the different customers and different projects and how to fulfil those needs
  • You will have input into the Designers Risk Register recording hazards and mitigations.
  • To act as a Telent ambassador
  • How to own problems and take the responsibility of solving them

The Technology:
You will learn a variety of Design aspects for various Operational Communications systems (including safety critical systems) as follows:

  • Telecom’s transmission systems (SDH & PDH)
  • Automatic phone exchanges (PABX)
  • Cable Networking (including copper, fibre optic and Cat5e/6e structured cabling)
  • Emergency telephone systems along the rail network
  • Basic IP Networking (Cisco Systems)

The Specifics:

  • The apprenticeship is typically 18 Months in duration
  • You will be mentored by colleagues, supervisors, and managers throughout the scheme
  • Starting salary of £14,000 which will increase throughout the duration of the apprenticeship
  • You will work with us and our chosen training provider Intequal
  • On completion of the scheme, you will have a BTEC Level 3 as an Information Communications technician
  • The apprenticeship is a managed scheme with a mix between apprenticeship course work, on site working and vendor exams
  • The apprenticeship will take place across dual location; Office based at our site in Warwick and remote working from home. There will also be site visits as required.

The Requirements:

To qualify to join this apprenticeship scheme you must meet the below criteria:

  • Have a minimum of 5 GCSEs grades 9 – 4 (A* - C) specifically in Maths, English and Science or an IT related subject
  • Be 18 years of age from September 2022
  • Possess normal colour vision & hearing
  • Pass a pre-employment drugs and alcohol assessment and adhere to Telent’s strict Drugs & Alcohol policy
  • A full UK Driving Licence
