Assistant Design Manager - Utilities

Location: London

Design & Technical Services Post Reports To: Design Manager

Safety Critical Post: Job summary in conjunction with the Design Manager - External Works, manage delivery of Utilities design to achieve a high quality, safe, compliant and timely design at the lowest achievable cost. You will work across Utilities scope including major works in the Utilities Corridor, and other works to mitigate impact of ground movement.

Key responsibilities


  • Monitor and design delivery in accordance with the programme
  • Contribute to the achievement of safe, buildable, operational and maintainable assets.
  • Maintain an uncompromising commitment to safety.
  • Review design deliverables and co-ordinate comments by others, ensuring compliance with Project Requirements and Works Information obligations/constraints.
  • Implement design review procedure and guide team through completing the review
  • Identify issues with the design, escalate and support resolution.
  • Support status/programme reporting, tracking of actions, risk reporting/mitigation and change management.
  • Monitor progression of technical assurance, especially where areas are progressively fixed.
  • Support ongoing cost forecasting and support cost reduction opportunities.
  • Support resolution of design interfaces with third party buildings and infrastructure.
  • Support innovation.
  • Verify designer competence and undertake surveillance of project design process.
  • Support engagement with the client, third parties and MDJV supply chain.
  • Assist in preparing scope documents and contract documentation.
  • Assist in producing documents, trackers and assurance documents.
  • Miscellaneous administrative tasks including arranging meetings/workshops and taking minutes.

  • Technical competencies


  • Have excellent communication skills (including presentation skills) in English, both written and verbal and the ability to report at both Project and Board level. 2.
  • Ability to manage teams of people in a multi-disciplinary environment. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan and manage own time.
  • A good working knowledge of the:
  • a) Health & Safety at Work Act 1974,
  • b) Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996
  • c) Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015
  • d) Management of health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999

  • Certifications & Experience

    • Experience within a design management environment.
    • Experience of the subject matter, i.e. infrastructure and utilities diversions
    • Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically Engineering discipline (or related). A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND, may be acceptable where experience in a technical engineering role can be demonstrated.
    • Working towards membership of an appropriate Professional body, typically Chartered membership of the Institute of Civil Engineering or equivalent UK/international equivalent professional status
