We are currently working with a major engineering consultancy who are looking to expand their highways team in Northern England in either Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Altrincham, or Newcastle by recruiting a Design Manager (Utilities).
You will work within our highways team on a range of projects which currently include:

We are currently working with a major engineering consultancy who are looking to expand their highways team in Northern England in either Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Altrincham, or Newcastle by recruiting a Design Manager (Utilities).
You will work within our highways team on a range of projects which currently include:
- National Highways Delivery in Partnership
- National Highways TA2 Schemes
- Transport for Scotland
- Innovative rapid transit concepts
- Bus Rapid Transit Projects (guided and unguided)
- Transport Hubs
- Highway projects with national contractors
- Local Authority highway promoted schemes
- Town/City Centre improvements
- Network Rail
- TfGM
- Managing Utility design/diversion as part of highway & public transport infrastructure.
- Maintaining a general knowledge of technical engineering codes and NRSWA, HAUC and NJUG.
- Compliance in accordance with the various utility companies standard requirements.
- Promoting and ensuring adherence to our health and safety policy and procedures.
- Managing discrete design packages and multi-disciplinary design teams and client facing activities.
- Provide support to build up a network of clients and undertake regular business development activities.
- Assisting in the training and development of other team members.
- Showing technical leadership and providing technical expertise and advice.
- Controlling task programme and budgets.
- Presenting technical advice to clients and stakeholders.
- Assisting Project Directors with project management and business development.
- Line Management, motivation, and performance of early career staff.
- Bachelors degree (Hons) in Civil Engineering, or equivalent.
- Professional membership in the highways sector e.g., Institution of Civil Engineers, CIHT etc.
- Proven experience working within an engineering profession.
- Must be able to demonstrate a track record in people skills and commercial awareness, with some business development.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD; Civils 3D; Navisworks; AutoDesk Infraworks; Bentley Open Roads and Projectwise.
- Competent in key highway disciplines to be able to independently check the work of others.
- Experience with identifying, managing and resolving multi-disciplinary interfaces
- Ability to identify bespoke engineering solutions in reducing scope of utility diversions
- Ideally involved in projects from assessing feasibility, concept design and detailed design.
- Experience of UK highway design codes and standards (Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual of Contract Documents for Highways Works etc).
- Experience applying CDM requirements in the role of designer.
- Provide input into bids where utilities present a major risk into project delivery
- Knowledge of NRSWA, including responding the challenges to its application.
- Understanding of cost savings under the Act
- Ability to manage delivery of utility diversions from C2 to C9 process
- Available to travel for short assignments when required to other UK and possibly overseas offices.
