Specialist Design Engineer – Networks

Reporting to the Design Manager (Fixed Telecoms), the Specialist Design Engineer - Networks undertakes the day to day responsibility for management and delivery of the design aspects of Network and Voice comms tenders and projects, within agreed timescales and budgeted costs, and is responsible for its contribution to overall business performance.

What are my Responsibilities?

With emphasis on Networks, Voice over IP and new technologies, responsibilities will be as follows;

  • Undertake Specialist Network Architect role technically leading and assisting the development of network designs for various projects
  • Produce & implement template network architectures, customizing them for the requirements of a project, incorporating that project’s connectivity and cybersecurity requirements to provide performance characteristics to customer specification, including;
  • Production of network architectural design description documents
  • Production of network architecture diagrams
  • Production of IP Addressing/Subnetting design
  • Production of Numbering Scheme and Dial Plan.
  • Production of Low Level Design documentation
  • Production of Migration strategy and plans
  • Presenting the network design architecture to the project and the customer.
  • Development of associated test specifications
  • Support for onsite build and test
  • Support for integration and system testing

  • Build and maintain strong communication links with the customers’ telecoms / Network specialists and delivery partners,
  • Interpret and influence the delivery strategy, based on the needs of these stakeholders.
  • Delivery of Network engineering activities to the agreed time, cost, quality and performance requirements
  • Perform the role of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE), with emphasis on Networks, and lead an engineering team to deliver engineering tasks
  • Responsible for technical lead in safety related system design.
  • Responsible for managing engineering risk elements of network designs.
  • Responsible for managing design aspects of contract requirements for network projects.
  • Produce engineering technical and Health and Safety documentation deliverables to meet project requirements.
  • Plan, co-ordinate and manage network design tasks including resources and equipment to deliver effectively and efficiently.
  • Regularly report network engineering team task progress and status.
  • Lead the provision of estimating for engineering projects and tenders about engineering resources, plans, technology, risk and process with emphasis on Networks
  • Ensure the appropriate standards, processes, procedures and tools are applied throughout the engineering life cycle.
  • Ensure tender and project tasks are delivered in accordance with applicable Safety and Quality procedures and meet all applicable legislative, safety and customer requirements.
  • Ensure tender and project tasks are delivered and undertaken in accordance with customer Health and Safety procedures and requirements within main line rail, light rail and mass transit environments.
  • Manage and identify project scope changes.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers, industry associations, suppliers and partners.
  • Responsible for maintaining and developing their own professional competence and mentoring engineers through the Chartered/Incorporated accreditation process.
  • Implementation of excellent verbal and numeric reasoning to positively influence both internal and external customers.

What experience do I need to apply for this role?

Mandatory:

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject.
  • CCNP Routing and Switching or equivalent experience
  • CCNP Voice/Collaboration or equivalent experience
  • Proven success leading and motivating a team of network engineers for effective design and delivery of telecommunications systems.
  • Strong experience and knowledge of implementation project engineering processes covering development, design, construction, test, commissioning and handover.
  • Implementation and application of requirements management.
  • Strong understanding and experience of Safety Critical and Safety Related activities in the rail or similar environment.
  • Proven flexibility in the role as it requires an element of travelling and unsociable hours working which may include night working, weekend working and bank holiday working.
  • Proven experience of integrating third party sub-systems into complete solutions.
  • Proven experience leading estimates for engineering projects and tenders with regard to resources, plans, technology, risk and process.
  • System knowledge of:
    • Network switches and routers: Cisco and RuggedCom

    • PABX Telephony systems
    • Third Party SIP Telephone
    • Voice Recording Solution
    • TDM and SIP Gateways
    • Network Management Systems
    • Turret systems
    • Structured Cable
    • Optical fibre cable
  • Good knowledge of IT systems and software, especially Microsoft Office and Project.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational, time management and problem solving skills.
  • Full UK Driving licence.

Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent status.
  • IRSE License in relevant category (e.g. Telecoms Design or Project Engineer)
  • Proven experience in CRE role for Safety Related Telecoms and Operational Telecoms projects.
  • Leadership and Management of delivery of development and implementation project tasks within the Main Line, Mass Transit and Light Rail environment or similar environment.
  • System knowledge of:
    • Cyber security: IDS/IPS, SIEM, Threat Detection, Anti Malware
